I do love crafty lyrics and have my fave singer/songwriter types (amongst prog, too, there are some great lyricists, I love David Cousins in particular). Being from the olden days, I agree with your take on the musicianship aspect and some of how prog came to be, but, think that there is also a direct line from the psychedelic era.
Ninet doesn't even need to move, it's always intriguing to see someone who can stay still and be so commanding. Janis, of course, moved, but even when still, she was a presence. Mary's got a beautiful face going for her as well as that voice. I really enjoy her with a band as well as solo. I do not care for October Project much without her. |

I would expect those on here who supossedly have a guilty pleasure of pop to hate TFTO. Clearly their taste is for popular music? So no mystery there? TFTO isnt LONG enough in my opinion...I was listening to Foxtrot on friday...Suppers ready is at least ten mins too short...The finale shouldn't fade out, Hackett should have been given another three mins of solo at least....

Tales is a challenge for people who expect a certain thing. Also, I agree that Supper's Ready is too short!

I'm good with that...Ritual is my least favorite of all 4 sides. Let's just make it a 5 album box with 10 songs and a copy of "Autobiography of a Yogi" and call it a day

10 minutes too short? The finale is the initial theme re-visited so making that theme even longer it would have been redundant, it woud have been soloing for the sake of soloing. Still surprised to see TFTO getting bashed.

Had it been condensed into a single album, it could have qualified for their best. As it is, I've always struggled to get all the way through. That said, I've not tried in years. I'll give it another go. |

^ I have been reading a set of music periodicals from 1973. The release got some very bad critical press, even if it was by ignorant and self aggrandizing tosspots! I first lent an ear in the late 70s or even maybe 1980..And it didnt grab me....but little by little I started to appreciate the full suite as possibly one of the best releases of all time. Its a proper symph prog album...Totally self indulgent and hated by all non proggers...It is wonderful if too short by my standpoint...

what I meant is that TFTO is disliked by many proggers. I'm not surprised "non-proggers" do not enjoy it, they probably only know Roundabout and Owner of a Lonely Heart anyway.

Nahhhh ... it needed those ten minutes, 27 more costume changes, 39 more light changes, 15 more keyboard solos, 7 more PG just walking about saying nothing and showing off his perfumes ... probably about 15 more lines to help actually make it a story, or something that made sense ... And the mix ... maybe if Alan Parsons was around it might sound better!

I've seen Anathema a couple of times now, and for the first time I saw them I would agree. When I saw them last year for The Optimist tour, Lee really stood out with her presence. Not only was she singing more (and not stuck to just groovin' with the rhythm in awkward fashion), but she had lost a lot of weight, was dressed in cool black garb, and was sporting a stylish ponytail. For live gigs, image means a lot, and she not only sang great as usual, but it was kinda hard for me to take my eyes off her...such a visual improvement. Poor Danny Cavanagh was looking really big though since I saw them first in 2013. It's like he's been scarfing down all of Lee's dinners for the past couple of years.

I actually found Fly from Here to to be a pleasant surprise as most of it holds my interest. Interestingly, that got my hopes up and then I found Heaven and Earth to be hopelessly bland and uninteresting. Not sure I can put my finger on the difference as they seem rather similar; one just happens to hit me and the other doesn't. Interestingly there was a similar, but even far stronger parallel in the last two Asia albums. I was shocked at the magnificence and perfection of XXX, far better than anything they had ever done IMO, including the debut. But then Gravitas was a massive letdown after that, being totally pedestrian with nothing standing out as unique or compelling.

Interestingly since someone started an Alan Parsons thread I would say most of the later albums in the 80's and forward are boring and generic to a large degree.
