I really enjoyed what I saw of her.  She's very charismatic.  Nice, rich voice.  It's hard to carry off one person, one guitar and she did it.  Then, with another guitarist and percussionist, two other pieces were excellent.  Her guitarist really suits her style, with that dark, spare playing.  Thank you, I will enjoy exploring further.

I guess we got a bit off topic, discussing things we like and trading artists, so apologies if anyone is miffed.

Guilty pleasure for him, we all have them. She has an amazing voice, I have 21 on vinyl and spin it on occasion. I am more a fan of Madonna, more my era. I like her voice on early albums, I also like Sade, both of their voices have body, not girly sounding. Diana Krall has a great voice also.......
But my guilty pleasures would be Madonna and Sade.....Then I spin some Iron Maiden Clap

Great voices there, too...Have you heard Mary Fahl (formerly October Project)?  Great contralto there, she's got a haunting version of Ben Aindi Habibi that she does and I loved OP's first LP and a lot of Mary's solo work (she performs all of Dark Side of the Moon live on occasion).  I really liked Madonna's La Isla Bonita...but not a fan of bullfighting, which isn't the issue here.

Hope you have heard this then.

I like Morbid Angel AND Michael Jackson.  And ABBA and plenty other 'good pop' acts. Kind of draw the line at stuff like Wham!

Wurd.  And I wonder if much of prog fan hate for pop comes from how bad prog rock bands were at writing pop.  OK I know Genesis wrote blockbuster pop but yeah I find those albums dull too.  And not in comparison to Genesis' prog work but compared to MJ or Prince.  Then again, a lot of 80s pop was terrible and is badly dated so maybe Genesis just added to the pile. Which is just like the 70s; plenty of 70s pop is boring as hell too.

Chances are that very clear preferences could be found when comparing a Beethoven symphony with "Pure Noise" by Art Zoyd (which is just that; despite this being one of the favourite bands of Logan and myself) or a Beatles classic with some dilettante adolescent's first fun composition; this kind of stuff was not tested. Still it is astonishing how little agreement there is between people when faced with some more "anonymous" music.

That would work IF music listeners were indeed listening for the melodic or harmonic progressions.  From my conversations with listeners, a vast majority of them listen to the SOUND of music rather than the underlying melodic/harmonic structure that actually makes the music sound the way it does.  And that is why there is so much confusion about what people like.  And people try to resolve this by compartmentalising music into genres and relying on recommendations from friends who share their tastes in music.  So if say the friend of Mr XYZ disliked something that shared similarities with something that XYZ likes, XYZ might be led to believe he/she won't like it too.

Sometimes, people let their instinct take over and react to the music as it happens, without preconceived notions or expectations.  Increasingly, that doesn't happen and is a part of why music has become much less culturally significant.  Because it's locked up in our bedrooms and airing silently on headphones inserted safely into the ears.  When music could and did intrude on us in public spaces, there was more opportunity to discover something you might never have and for it to become a shared experience of all in the community/neighbourhood (even if they didn't all know each other).  I grant that maybe in less densely populated areas, this was less of a factor even ere the digital age but where I grew up, it was impossible to escape the sound of music playing at some nearby grocer's place etc.  It could also be very irritating, of course, if you didn't like the song and would still have to listen to it a million times just because somebody wanted to!

One band I've tried to get into repeatedly and just failed every time. Van Der Graaf Generator.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't deny the talent and they are certainly not generic. But MAN ARE THEY BORING. I'd have an easier time falling asleep to this stuff then Music for Airports.

Also, I actually do enjoy a couple of their songs ("Killer" to name one), but overall I just cannot get into them, as much as I want to because they are very well liked among the community.

Of all things that can become generic and boring is highly involved intricate playing but where the means to and end is the end in itself.

e.g The usual suspects are all identifiable different as their albums required massive thught and musical development to accomplish things. But this groundwork thus laid meant that bands that followed thought they had to play in this / these styles.

Heard a Neal Morse set a while back and gave it away. Fine playing that left me respecting technique but the lack of a decent tune (even given the music was melodic) but said , to me, nothing other than he enjoys his bible study and has a fine rhythm section. 4 CDs of this was more than I could take though...

Another was an album by virtuoso band Niacin. Absolutely nothing to say and a very involved way of saying it.

Even guitar whizz supreme Al Di Meola fell into this. I bought his Live At Montreux DVD. Stunning acoustic playing - really truly, amazing. He was feeling it but, alas, I wasn't. There was a brief moment of real melody which stood out like canine testes and showed what could be accomplished with a real statement and his ungodly ability.

I doubt prog is the dead end that generic implies - there is a lot of vocabulary but what's needed is someone to say what they have to say and say it well.

An album that I find to be generic and boring is Tales From Topographic Oceans (Yes). To my ears, it sounds like the audio analogue of painting by numbers. They seem to be going through the motions of creating a prog epic, but the final result just leaves me uninterested.

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

I have...I think the sound is not good and it sounds a bit like they tried to over-sing each other (not intentionally)....Maybe they couldn't hear themselves well in the setting.  I do know that Mary Fahl is a fan of Annie Haslam's.  Maybe made her a bit nervous, especially if they hadn't really met first.

Nonetheless, two certainly phenomenal singers sounding like only themselves.

How sad ... one of the most individualistic of folks and bands (both PH and VdGG), with the most insane variety of music, and you state this.

The guy has no idea what "style" means ... and even made fun of it with a send up in one album!

It's not about "generic" ... it's about interpreting the words to the best effect, and you just happen to not like poetry ... you need more rap in your life?
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

IIRC either Annie had Mary Fahl and her husband over or the other way round a couple of months before this performance.  Because Annie had posted about the meeting with a photo and hinted that she was thinking of something like this performance.  I think the problem was only that you can't really match a contralto and soprano's range no matter what; so Fahl ended up sounding like she was straining to sing the verses.  Nevertheless, sound issues notwithstanding, thought they did it very well, the harmonising in the last verse of I think of you was great.

Yes, there I think you hit on the actual problem of it!  Very astute.  And, sound could even have been better in person, as it could be the sound on the recording that is sketchy.

Mary Fahl is very talented, listened to some YT stuff. Reminds me of Lee Douglas, excellent vocalist...where both are weak is in visual performance. If you watch some of the new Anathema videos you see Lee trying to "dance" and she looks worse than Elaine on Seinfeld LOL.

That's what gets me about Ninet, she is a presence on the stage, powerful. Reminiscent of Janis Joplin and even Pat Benatar.

A bit back on topic, TFTO is simply too long and I think that is all it suffers from. The musical content is more than enough to keep my attention, the lyrics IMHO are insanely cra-cra and at times ridiculous...but that's prog artists of the 70s.
Prog and progressive rock is 80-90% about musicianship because it stems from jazz and classical where lyrics are non existent.

This might be the most hilarious description of a prog rock album ever, lol. Not an unpopular opinion in the prog community in general! I'm one of the few freaks that it clicked with on first listen, and still enjoy it to this day.

Me too. Though it took me a few listens to fully appreciate it, I still love it to this day. I guess people's tastes are different. I respect those you are quite different to mine, but I appreciate more those who are similar.
