aye....  I coined the term 'catastrophic success' in aftermath of that election.  It was twofold.. showed very clearly that the Republican Party, long the oppo party who did nothing but rail against Obama, obstruct and generally make promises that were... unrealistic.. so when they got the keys of power. Remember they did not merely expect to lose the White House but the Senate as well... so when they didn't have Democrats to blame.. and had to make policy.. and actually govern.. they have utterly and completely failed.. setting the party back in the eyes of many. Yet that is nothing compared to what Trump.. and Trump voter who put him there.. has done to that party. They were well on the way to losing minorites and perhaps near as completely as they did black, and though not covered as closely.. they were slipping mightily with women and educated suburbanites..  all that not jsut merely expedited by Trump.. but as I noted in my last post. The Repubicans already needed to have broadened their appeal years ago.. but thanks to Trump winning.. any attempt to do an about face has been put off in my estimation by a decade (2028) and it will be too late by then.

I am a Oregonian myself..  born and raised in Portland but living here in the east coast and south.  Yes the differences between the coasts are quite something regarding voting. IT shoud be that easy. I liken it much to the much ballyhoed 'innocent till proven guity'. Better to set free one gulity man than imprison an innocent. Much better to let one sketchy voter vote than scare or intimidate one free voter from voting.

Much of the basis of that  are the still very real racism, just less overt these days for the most part, which still pervades everyday life here and obviously sexploiting it has proven to be a winning SHORT TERM political strategy by the Republican Party. However as we are seeing.. the butcher's bill for that short term polktical success is likely coming soon.. and will be also be catastrophic.. ie..  losing viablity as a national party and becoming a mere regional rump white rural opposition party.

Great term!  I think the only women who are sticking with the Republicans after all of this are the one-issue voters (the Religious Right....although I hate to use the word "right," when describing them).  Funny how they are so forgiving of this man's (and his ilk's) foibles, yet don't apply the teachings of Jesus to much of anyone else or anything else.

I have also lived in the South, Nashville, which is actually more liberal than most of the rest of that state (exiled with bus company, long story, about 40' long, as most buses go).  And spent some time in the East, but didn't live there, it is a very different place than the West.

The overt racism is terrifying to me, and the anti-Semitism (my son is of Russian Jewish heritage, although I'm kind of a Pagan and leaning toward Kindness myself).  Old hippie that I am.  I think of it as a festering wound that with the opening of it, will bleed out and die out, hopefully sooner than later.

It's an amazing history lesson, we are here to tell the tales of it.  I do think that you are correct in your assessments.

yeah.. I sort of did like that one. Allmost as much as my... ahhh.. you went there

'non-Wynette women' quip.  I agree and do think for the most part the women who remain with that party are single issue voters, the vast majority social issues obviously since that is the only hat the Republican Party really can wear these days.

Traditionalists, a woman's place is in the home, barefoot and f**king pregnant... stand by your man and be in the front of row to lynch darkiie to keep them in their place types. Products of their upbringings in racial politics in the south and large parts of the midwest. Thus the literal disintegration of women indentifying themselves as Republicans in the non rural agrarian parts of the country.

and to follow on to that..

I read something interesting this morning..  I don't normally read or care much for opinion pieces.  One reason I tend to stay clear of traditional media outlets is I like hard facts and data, not the directed spin of what others think of it. I can make up my own mind thank you very much just give me the information. Yet I read a really interesting opinion piece this morning.. on the slightly right of center thehill website

I admit .. the title of it was click bait...

it raises a very interesting notion.  Diversity is not just about race or sex.. it is about diversity of thought. Really interesting to see this opinion piece make a point that while women are making gender poltics more diverse.. it is sort on the way to losing diversity within the gender.

That was very interesting, you don't typically see the idea of diversity of thought, but it certainly belongs in the diversity column.  Especially as a talking point for debate, it is actually necessary to have for a debate, after all.

I think the biggest problem for the Republican party, besides lining up behind 45, is that over the years, their economic policies (thinking of trickle-on, oh excuse me, trickle-down) have proven to not work for the majority of Americans, and that on other philosophic matters, they just are outmoded and outdated and most people just don't think that way any more except in isolated pockets...and the isolation is part of what provides the fertile ground for some of what we have seen lately.

However, once educated, it's pretty hard to go back to not being educated.  Maybe the more open communication facets have led to much of the ugliness but it can also be effective to combat it.  And I think we are seeing more of that.

Ignorance probably won't go away entirely, but I think a big chunk of it is being eaten away as time is showing the emperor's lack of clothes.  The globe will always be populated by a few flat earthers, after all.  Smile

that was interesting wasn't it!

I needless to say agree with you 100% about the state of the Republican Party.  They are what I call an ideologically bankrupt party.. other than social issues and red meat.. they really have nothing. Once they were the party of economic responsibility.. well that has perhaps finally been repudiated...  even though it took 30 years for it to finally go.  Economic conservatism?  Has become nothing more than... slash funding and impose a half baked draconian social darwinism. If you have money? great.. if not.. oh well.. you should have done better.. or worked harder.. so you are sh*t out of luck. Go do a gofundme and see if anyone will help you.

as far as divesrity of thought as the last year have shown..   the Republican Party has completed a process that really started in 2012..  when ideological purity is prized more than rational and intelletual discussion.  One thing I took from that op piece..  they spoke of past moderate Republican women.. and the need to encourage them.. sure .. again.. sounds easy.. expect for it it isn't just moderate women that have become extinct withing the Republican Party.. it is moderates Republicans in general men AND women.  Many have retired.. seeing what the party has become.. and still many others got drowned by the blue wave.

what I find interesting .. is what happens to the Democratic Party...  it's greatest strength is the diversity of thought and lack of a core ideology.. but it had been its' greatest weakness until the Trump effect took hold in 2018 and surely will again in 2020...  but I do see a great danger once the unifying effect of trump is gone..  does the Democratic Party dissolve into warfare between its centrists and left progressive elements thus after the dust settles having a party that while more benevolent and responsible than what the Republican Party has become.. it just as barren in diverstiy of thought as what the Republican Party has become.

I think the Trump effect is pretty much as "unintended consequences," for the Republican party.  And, yes, the most intriguing part is how will the Dems reconstruct themselves in light of what has happened and when there isn't such an obvious face to target in the middle of the Rep dartboard?

yeah.. as much as I hope the Democratic party remains diverse and maddeningly chaotic due to divesity... I don't see it happening.  We are already seeing the battle lines being drawn between progressive and centrist.

Can they work together... they did in getting the ACA passed... but part of the Trump effect has not only been banging the few needed nails in the coffin of the 'national' Republican Party... it has had its effects on the Democratic Party as well.  A shift to the left which Bernie started with the youth... but among some older voters and I do see this in myself who while a Democrat was generally a moderate a centrist.. who liked parts of what both parties offered.. and Trump has pushed us further to the left. A radicalizing if you will.

in absence of Trump.. there will the next attempt to replicate him.. but Trump was likely unique in his ability to do so.. but I strongly suspect in 2024 some one will try to maximize the white right vote and they will likely get crushed.. thus as I noted yesterday.. I really don't see a coming to terms of meeting their electoral reaper and the attempt to moderate..  will it be too late?  I think it will.. but we will see

as far as Democrats....  the youth seems to be more left than center.. to say nothing of being right. That is where the energy and passion is. and if they feel the center of the party is standing in their way.. that will become the target in absence of a credible Republican/right wing target.

Thus my theory that the left will win a ideological battle with the center.. it is where the energy and passion is and as the Republican Party has long shown.. those MATTER for they they don't get apathetic.. and are highly engaged and do get out to vote.  Thus I can really see the centrist being pushed out of the Democratic Party...   and eventually merging with the displaced centrist of the old Republican Party to form a centrist major 2nd party which will replace the dying regional white identity poliics of the current Republcian Party.

It is definitely intriquing.. it is like you said earlier.. and I've been saying for some time.  This is such a fascinating time.  I wouldn't piss on Trump even if he was on fire right in front of me but I do give him credit for two things.. . remaining true to himself... give him credit for that..  he is who he is and hasn't changed nor is capable of it..  but the more important point.. he changed the status quo of America and its politics.

as I like to say...  America in 20 years will look nothing like it does now..   in many ways of course.. but specifically it will not look anything politically like it does today.  Trump has sort of set off a major political realignment and on top of the demographic changes you are likely to see the obliteration of one major party the transformation of the other.. and the creatiion a new one. The first true political realignment we have had in several hundred years.

And that, truly, is the beauty of our system, it is actually alive and capable of change by the will of the people.

I sincerely hope we do have something here to look like in 20 years, the natural climate and the international political climate have both become more potentially catastrophic (perhaps because I have several friends displaced in the Paradise, CA fires, thankfully, they and their pets are all still alive).

You should, I hope, save some of your predictions and see how they play out over time.  I think they are well thought out and also, hopeful.

word sista... Thumbs UpHeartBeer

America's greatness is rooted in one thing if one was to boil it down to one thing... diversity. Hopefully I'll be around and still trolling PA's and will see these changes.. but I doubt it Micky was built for speed .. not longevity.

and that diversity is going to change this country and its politics..  nothing the dogwhistling fear mongering party of white nativism that the Republican Party has become can change it. They had a narrow window of 2 years of having the keys of power but did nothing.. but give out corporate welfare and prattle on about some f**king wall which ignored the real problem for them. Legal immigration.

not sure if you have read this... I haven't posted in awhile.. and not sure if you read this outside of these pages.  Check this out.. disregardling the pre-2016 election date... for I suspect it was written as the beginning of the dicussion that should have happened for the Party after getting crushed in 2016 but due to that 'catastrophic success' its day of reckoning was pushed back..  likely to 2028 which simply may too late for the  changes underway now.. might be cemented firmly in place as it did the blacks.. and it only took 4 years to throughly turn them off the Republican Party. What will another 10 years of trying to pander to white fears do to Hispanics and now add women and educated suburbanites to the already fatal electoral cliff they were dancing on, and known the party years before. Thus Gov. Arnie's warning.. and the much ballyhooed 2012 election post-mortem.

Interesting how they prophesied at the end there...

I agree wholeheartedly with you that sticking with that white identity thing will kill them off, you can't multiply if you keep turning off the women and we all know what happens with inbreeding over time.  Diversity and the ability to adapt is what makes any species flourish.  Even species of thought.

May you still be here to see it change for the better and not be too speedy in predicting your own demise before that happens.

yeah it would be nice to see what comes to pass..  however my demise is not as much a prediction.. but a collection of past debts..  LOL

speaking of that.. not a prediction.. but finally paying up one's dues for living the sinning life...

curious to as how this rather grim climate change report that came out yesterday  plays out politically

It seems to be being heard, in wake of the Paradise fire, in particular, despite their waiting for a "Black Friday Dump."  I know five displaced families there, they all got out with their lives and pets, but not a lot more.

I think with the people who are concerned with it having more power in January, maybe we can get back on the right track with that.  I had heard an encouraging report re the ozone layer, that it was actually doing better after decades aerosols, at least according to the UN.

I hadn't heard that about the ozone.  Some good news at least.

I do wonder if it will really give some drive to that 'green new deal' we heard so much about in the last week. That is an issue one can really see bringing together left and center.. unlike some of the more divisive economic ideas floated by the left or sticking to being whores for Corporate America and its money/influence like many centrists are.

Of course it will have to wait a few years if it is to happen.. but a girl can dream can't she.

Climate report warns of worsening U.S. disasters
By Seth Borenstein Associated Press
WASHINGTON - As California’s catastrophic wildfires recede and people rebuild after two hurricanes, a massive new federal report warns that these types of extreme weather disasters are worsening in the United States. The White House report quietly issued Friday also frequently contradicts President Donald Trump.

The National Climate Assessment was written long before the deadly fires in California this month and Hurricanes Florence and Michael raked the East Coast and Florida. It says warming-charged extremes “have already become more frequent, intense, widespread or of long duration.”

The federal report says the last few years have smashed records for damaging weather in the U.S., costing nearly $400 billion since 2015. “Warmer and drier conditions have contributed to an increase in large forest fires in the western United States and interior Alaska,” according to the report.
