Thanks go to Alex Machacek, Gren Bartley and Rich Krueger for personally providing me with copies of their latest releases, featured this coming Thursday show. Swedish guitar whiz Mattias I A Eklundh is our artist of the week, popping up three times. The jazzy bits are firmly in the fusion area. However, as ever we aim for great variety

Please note too, I have formally taken over the radio station's sustain from 8 to 9pm, and with the deaths recently announced of Jefferson Airplane's Marty Balin, RAI star Rachid Taha and blues legend Otis Rush, expect many examples of these late gentlemen's music being played.

Hurray we are back for the 34th (or 35th?) series. As usual the first show is aimed at freshers to introduce them to this possibly eclectic range of musics but perhap some familiar bands to the regulars. New releases from John Mclaughlin, Soft Machine and Phronesis, though not necessarily new tunes. Alas more sad news with the premature death of Algerian Rai star Rachid Taha. Other world music from Brazilian Tigana Santana. Russian psychedelia (or is it space rock) from Vespero. And in there folk music from friends Emma Buckley and former LU student Gren Bartley.

As the academic year nears its end, I'm taking the chance to pick a few of my favourite tunes from the last few decades. (Alas no space for Touch, this time). This includes something from Jon Hiseman who most sadly died a few days ago. If you are a regular listener, then some of these pieces you'll recognise, if not, stand by for some superior music.

More interesting jazz, including some new experimental. An excellent heavy rock album from JCM, including the desperately ill master drummer Jon Hiseman. Our good wishes go out to him and his family. Dipping further into that most interesting Locks' alternative folk album; also Martin Carthy sings 'Scarborough Fair'. Discovered Ray LaMontagne recently, a friend suggested his voice hinted at Art Garfunkel's ... so more. Friend of the programme, Kim Sajn (aka PE PET +1) and a sample from his forthcoming album. Then a recommendation from another regular listener: Manchester's Buffalo Brother.

Back again after a very enjoyable break in far west Wales. Tonight we have largely new releases, especially the jazzy end of things. Exceptions include Harry Chapin (a song, re gun crime, US style), Murphy Blend the really obscure heavy German band recorded about 1970, the oft bootleg UK band  Andromenda, and a personal favourite Nick Gravenites.

Apologies for the late posting. Perhaps more fringe jazz than straight tonight, with Dinosaur, Tonbruket, Snowpoet and (a Sept 2018 release from) We Are Lief. Joe Bonamassa does his tribute to British Blues (but restricted to Beck, Page and Clapton, as it happens). Two excellent alternative folk albums from Lock and Duotone. A long electronica piece from Node. Then some old remastered rock found in the obscure archives: Fuzzy Duck and Sweet Smoke. Join me from 9pm BST.

Celebrating Derby based singer Emma Buckley's appearance with the great Gary Lucas, next Monday in London, singing Jeff Buckley tunes. Also playing another Derbyshire folkie John Tams, who was involved closely with the Warhorse theatrical and cinematic developments. A newie from Laura Jund's Dinosaur. More interesting innovative jazz from the UK jazz label Brownswood Recordings by keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones. Another comparative experiment, this time folk v prog interpretations of Krimson's Starless in the last 30 minutes of ALT2.  Also interesting rock from The Good Rats and A Perfect Circle. Then plenty of other varied music to intrigue you.

Interesting jazz this week (as usual), with a couple of musicians not played on the show normally, Cecil Taylor who died recently and Ornette Coleman. And David Torn welcomed, even as a guest, with Vortex. Swedes (?) Pontious Snibb's  appeared in Leicester a few weeks ago, so a chance to check out their new album. And excellent news, Emma Buckley local folk singer and heavy featured here, is appearing with Gary Lucas in London mid May, singing a couple of Gary Lucas/Jeff Buckley tunes.

Hello All

Back after a restful Easter break having seen the excellent Emma Buckley a couple of times... hopefully some news on that front in the next few weeks.  Tomorrow night you'll hear another mix of the old (mostly reissued/remastered recently) and the new (especially the jazz-related music). Read that a couple of reissues had been labelled 'psychedelic folk', so ISB, Kaleidoscope and Dr Strangely Strange feature here under that heading. Great, if unexpected fusion of dub and Norwegian nu jazz on the album 'Nordub'. To be expected: samples from the latest King Crimson and Chicago live releases.  Talking live brass rock I came across a great footage of The Sons Of Champlin recorded in SF late 60's ... alas I couldn't get hold that particular soundtrack to play but found a longer version of the same tune on one of their later albums to finish the show.

We continue with our tribute to the late Didier Lockwood. Sampling the forthcoming album from Kimara Sajn's +1. Thanks to a close friend, I've belatedly discovered Harry Chapin. Also purchased and featuring a little both from the new Adam Holzman album and Beppe Crovella's 2012 tribute to Soft Machinist Mike Ratledge. A comparison of Buckleys ... but here not related. And the punk/garage blues of Northern Ireland's The Bonnevilles.

(Weather permitting) tonight's show is mix of old and new. Belatedly reminded that Norway's heavy fusionists Elephant9, released a new album in January. Femi, son of the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti has a great new afrobeat jazz album. A new album by Al DiMeola is always welcome. Two tracks by Jen Shyu  both where she plays SE Asian instrumens. Tribute to jazz violinist Didier Lockwood. More from local folk singer Emma Buckley, who I saw live last Friday belting out 'Midnight Train To Georgia' (forthcoming gigs in the Derby area of the UK, are listed: this is for the locals). The 'old' comes from Love ('Forever Changes' celebrates it 50th Anniversary), Chapman Whitney, Black Keys and Swedish bluesman Jimmy Agren. And Everything Everything have a new ep out, as they just go on tour.

More new releases, especially the jazz, including a couple of Shabaka albums and a is it jazz/or isn't it from Snowpoet. Local folk singer, Emma Buckley and her first ep - btw performing locally in Derby this Friday too. Then there is dip into a pair of American prog classics, recorded 30 years apart, ie. The Shaming Of The True and Touch.

Continuing with a mix of the old from the archives and new releases, pleased to say we've got our fingers on the new GoGo Penguin album, further blurring boundaries between jazz and other genres. A dip into a couple of new ACT Records releases.... also Moonjune release in the form of Vantomme. A nice discovery of recordings made by the famous Radiophonic Workshop. More from the new Isildurs Bane album - thanks again to Thomas in Sweden for this. Then the usual unusual blend of musics.

After a long run of new releases on the ALT2 Show, for the majority of this show I've gone to the archives .......although there are handful of new carry overs from last week's show.

It has been a good week for good new promos, and those included in this week's show: Vantomme, Kim Sajn (aka +1), Paula Rae-Gibson & Sam Leak (a deliciously erotic bit of poetry and free jazz), Ashton  Lane, Isildurs Bane and few ECM newies. Thanks to all who supplied. Thanks too to En and Gren for suggesting music from the archives, respectively, Il Baricentro and Djeli Moussa Diawara & Bob Brozman.

A few weeks ago I, (along with many others), received a press release from Joyce, Cuneiform Records Press Officer. Steve Feigenbaum the brains behind Cuneiform, has decided that the label is taking a sabbatical for 2018, so he can consider the label's future. The loss even a temporary loss, of this label and it innovative quarterly releases, is a shock to me So one purpose of this week's ALT2 Show is remind listeners of some of those innovative, varied artists and albums that have appeared over the last couple of decades. These include the new and those that have lurked unreleased for far too long in some archives.... and Cuneiform have exposed  to the world. (In particularly here, those that I have especially enjoyed, and indeed you may have heard me play previously). Enjoy and don't forget to buy. Support Cuneiform Records!

With the positive feedback to last week's music more from Linda May Hay Of, and (the remastered) Pat Metheny Group and Burton/Corea. Quite some enthusiasm for Typhoon's  new and 4th album Offerings, critics suggesting by mid January this is one of the best rock albums of 2018, even though this  concept album is of memory loss. Interesting offer from Kramer and Bill Frisell deconstructing some classic songs to come out of NYC's Tin Pan Alley. Dipping into a couple of sample albums; one covering the psychedelic period in San Francisco, the other providing a broad and deep review of female folk singers (but no Joni Mitchell?). And then there is another reminder of Rare Earth live.

Happy New Year!

A new year and a new term. A catch up on 2017 releases and reissues. Remasters from Burton/Corea, Pat Metheny Group, Bob Dylan, Gil Scott-Heron, (plus Man from 2008). Excellent new jazz from bassist Linda May Hay Oh, Rez Abbasi. Jazz funk from the amusingly named Pigeons Play Ping Pong. After searching for a very long time I've got my fingers on Mick Pini's first album of 1989, with guest appearances by Paul Jones and Chris Youlden.  And then there is the Norwegian band that caught my ear at the end of 2017: Trojka. Finally what seems sad news, Cuneiform Records have announced they are not issuing any new albums in 2018. We have been great believers in the very special music that the label have issued and we have played; come back soon.

Found an excellent Norwegian band, Trojka who sound to have distant echoes of Canterbury's Machine and Hatfields and I've been playing non-stop this last weekend. A new albums from Slivovitz, and Wadada Leo Smith, back to his Miles influenced jazz fusion/funk. Mike Keneally joins Panzerballett for a metallised Christmas song. Interesting Nu Prog from bands, The Dear Hunter, Myrkur and Dialects. A request for more Pentangle is answered. And taken from a 12 CD set of composer Pierre Henry music, 'Polyphonies' is an excuse to play more from the challenging 'Ceremony'. BTW Graphite was found deep in the Archives. And of course the last track from our musician of the term, Gary Husband. Then there is a comparison of father and son Buckley. And, as a dear friend would say: beware of some recordings sounding like spanners in a washing machine..... but it won't be the ALT2 Show otherwise.
