Doctor Who repeats from the 60s poll, but I feel that it bears repeating. It was in the 70s that I first saw Doctor Who. Others that ran from the 60s into the 70s I won't mention a second time. This is sci-fi heavy as I was a sci-fi kid.

Faulty Towers is one of few shows, that can make you die of laughter, litterly.

For sure.   Sometimes I wish it had gone on a bit longer, on the other hand each episode is so good one wonders if they could've sustained that quality, but I'm guessing Cleese and Booth would've done a great third season.

I'd add the original Odd Couple with Randall & Klugman.

Another great nostalgic selection. Multiple votes again - although many more could have got chosen too. Fawlty Towers definitely tops for me. I could practically recite all 12 episodes - not surprising, as I must have seen them around a hundred times over the last four decades and still laugh out loud. Great drama with I Claudius (or I Clav Divs as I like to call it!), Colditz, Tinker...., etc which I've watched repeatedly. However, it was a great time for classic UK Sci-Fi (shaky props and all) and Blakes 7, UFO, Space 1999, The Tomorrow People and Dr Who most notable.

However. I have a lot of time for a children's Sci-Fi/Fantasy series called Children of the Stones - which had real atmosphere and mirrored my interest in stone circles etc at the time. Saw it again a year or two ago and it has aged really well and shows a maturity for a children's series that doesn't seem to exist these days, sadly.

Never really watched A Family at War (my parents did though), but Vaughan Williams's theme remains a very powerful memory.

No Oneden Line or Poldark, though. Sunday night highlights before school in the morning (wistful 'Alan Partridge--style' sigh follows!)

Totally agree! I remember 'the Children of the Stones' as well and that I was pretty fascinated by it.. I must check it out again!

Being a fully paid up member of the Gerry/ Sylvia Anderson and Postgate-Firman appreciation societies so anything by these genii of children's entertainment was (and remains) a big joy to me.

I'm also a big fan of the Michael Bond- Ivor Wood creation 'The Herbs' and 'Adventures of Parsley'... I think that along with Pogle's wood subliminally moved me toward my eventual career on the landLOL

On a more adult theme (well not really..) my favorites are of course Monty Python, Fatty Owls.. sorry I mean Farty Towels.. er.. Flowery t***s.. Fawlty towers... (my Wife comes from Torquay and knows the hotel it was based on) and the rise and fall of Reginald Perrin..

Of course 'The old grey whistle test' (old grey whistle theft)Wink

I voted Fawlty though I had a thing for U.F.O.    The Bionic Woman was pretty good (much better-written than TSMDM), and I remember that Invisible Man series with Dave McCallum.

^ Unfortunately everyone watched it, at least for a season or so.   Not much else was on Sundays at 8 pm.

BSG's some fine TV space opera. Yes, it took some cues from Star Wars (because that's how trends work), but it was originally conceptualized ten years earlier and owed much more to ancient astronaut theories and In Search Of... than hooded hermits with laser swords.

^ True, the design team couldn't resist lifting some things Lucas commissioned but didn't use until 1980.   You can see the Imperial Shuttle in the Viper, the Probe Droid in the Cylon Base Star, and Vader in the masks of Centurions.

The Rockford Files was the overall best show of the '70s, anyway...

^ Love Blake's 7.

^^ I expect that you're being glib, but I feel like being serious. The Rockford Files, which I did like, being better than from this poll Pennies From Heaven and I, Claudius is very debatable and ultimately subjective, and that it's objectively better than, say, Kieślowski with Piesiewicz's Dekalog (from the 80s poll) I think you would have to work very hard to make a case for in terms of artistic and thematic merit. How could one even consider best without having seen everything from around the world, understanding the cultures and situations, appreciating the themes, identifying with characters, and a host of other things?

I would not claim best as I have not seen everything, and even if I did, I don't think I could do it objectively. We all have our biases which are informed by our experiences and heredity. Our backgrounds, ethnicity, language and general make-up as well as our lack of opportunity to see and experience everything makes best lists commonly a very silly endeavor to me (there is often best for me at a given time, but even that's only based on what I know and my current mindset).

And Micky, this poll is merely a reflection on what I like (mostly at least, I added a few that I thought Dwill would enjoy in the lists even though I'm not a big fan), though even according to what I know and my tastes it could be better had I put more time and thought into it. I would like to see your own series of polls, but I wonder if it would end up being too US-centric for my tastes (I'm not American of course). You can't please everybody. I've seen Barney Miller and it didn't connect with me as much as others on the list. To claim poll fail in someone's favourites list, that would mean that you would have to know what they know well and that person's background and psychology really well and therefore know what should have been included. I do get posts where I think, doh, I should have included that, but I'm also a determinist, so whatever was to be included was to be included given my circumstances at the time of creating a poll, and there's not much point in having regrets. Anyway, I really do wish that more people would try to come up with their own lists, and hopefully the audience won't complain (give facepalms or claim that one failed) and will find something to like off your lists. I will admit that there are some clunkers in the list, but how many of these have you even seen?

A general note: My personal approach rather than just listing an other would be to try to say something about the selection and then recommend something that should appeal to that person specifically. I might also mention my favourite, but unless I knew the person really well, I wouldn't make disparaging comments if my favourites were not listed. I get great recommendations and reminders frequently in the forum, but I also get a lot of posts where it seems that people are not at all interested in my choices -- in which case, why not just make your own polls? I'm happy to hear other choices mentioned, but it can come across as rude when one does it in a way that shows disinterest. Of course Micky has never been Mr. Manners and I wouldn't expect it.

I certainly wish that my lists were more representative of shows that came out from around the world.

How did I miss Land of the Lost in this list? Not only did I love that as a kid, but I've rewatched all of them as an adult.

Next time I do such a poll, if I ever do (it's time consuming), I will prepare a master list in, say Notepad, and add to it over a few days before posting so that I remember more and am not so neglectful.

I wasn't being glib. Rockford's awesome. So is M*A*S*H. So's Soap. So's WKRP

No, we don't have to agree on everything. If we did, the world would be a boring place. Imagine if everyone loved loved loved Doogie Howser, M.D.? That would be akin to the Sixth Circle. LOL

Loved Soap. That's one I neglected. I'm not saying that those aren't great, just that I wouldn't make claims of greatest since for me that would require knowing and having the ability to fully appreciate everything, and even then my biases would come through. But you're just talking taste (subjectivity), not making objective truth claims and I was approaching it from a different perspective. So that's fine, but I was using your post as a springboard for a side-discussion from a different angle.

It's kind of apples and oranges to say that it is greater than, say, I, Claudius. Greater in what way? More artistic, more eloquent, better writing, better acting, better direction? I know you to be a rational person, and in your case it just means greatest for you based on what you know, but when some people say such things they honestly seem to believe that it is objectively true and not open for debate, which is very close-minded and tends to show ignorance.

I do believe that it's not all subjective and there ways to evaluate merit within frameworks of analysis and I do think that one compare the merits of shows within certain frameworks, but I personally tend to avoid claims such as greatest (maybe that's because of my particular background of studies). I think there are better and more nuanced ways to approach it.

And I think that disagreements can be good, and I do like to think my mind can be changed when new compelling evidence comes along. A debate on the merits of shows and music, even when it's ultimately subjective, can be fun too.

Perhaps we could have a fun debate on the merits of Dekalog vs. The Rockford Files, but it's chalk and cheese as the two are so very different and so the exercise would I think be pretty pointless.

You haven't done it, but I wish more people who are critical of one's choices would at least try to get familiar with the choices before judging the selection. This has happened to me many times at PA. I would do a poll and state that they are my favourites, and then someone would say "Where the hell is such-and-such"? Sometimes I don't know it, sometimes I don't like it, and usually such people aren't familiar with my choices so how can they judge the merit of their choice over mine? It's a strange sense of entitlement and grievance. It can be rather nice that people have different tastes, and I wish more people were open to expanding their tastes and trying different things, and were more adventurous and open-minded and open-eared and open-eyed. That's the liberal mind-set that I believe in. One should be open to new evidence and ideas, be willing to discuss such things, and changeable in opinion, and avoid being didactic (nuance is too often lacking in posts and thought, methinks).

That said, I want to make it clear that I do want to hear about other options and I hope to discover and re-discover TV shows thanks to these polls, and I hope that others who are posting here also are entering here looking to discover and re-discover new to them things, and show open-minds and a spirit of inquiry in discussion. It is very gratifying when someone says that they discovered something thanks to a poll or post and I am glad to see friendly, vibrant discussion about options not on my list as well as about those that are on it.
