I have a long standing question, hope some music guru here can help

The album which you will see on this link below, is a compilation, attributed to TWL, and released on Polydor, in 1975.

Lifetime* - Lifetime: LP, Comp For Sale | Discogs

A friend of mine bought this album, back in the seventies, in London. But I think that what my friend has is a "mispressing". Here's why

I have a copy of it on CD, which i made from MP3 copies my friend sent to me, from his LP album.

Because I like it so much I want to buy the original on CD.

I have looked around for it, and could not find the CD. I don't think it was ever released on CD.

But I did find LPs for sale and I thought, ok, I will buy the LP album. There are many available for sale, on Discogs, for instance.

But when I listened to the samples I was surprised to find that they have nothing to do with the music I know from that album.

I contacted one of the sellers on Discogs and he was kind enough to send me a few MP3s from his album, which he was trying to sell.

And, again, it confirmed that the music is not what I want to buy.

So, my question is,
Who is the band in my (copied) CD? I have tried a thousand ways, and asked a hundred people, to see if anyone can tell me who this band is and no one, to this day, has been able to tell me.

I have even tried to contact Polydor, but they have not replied to me.

I have also tried to find and ask John Mc Laughlin's music publishers, but also had no reply.

I'm not sure how to attach a MP3 here, is it allowed?

If you have access to Whatsapp I can send you a few Watsapp sample recordings, which I made.

It is a good enough recording to get an idea of what the music is.

The music I have is 70s rock, not Fusion.

It is a great album, and I always thought (for 30 years of listening to it) it could only have been John McLaughlin on guitars, because I think the guitarist is really outstanding. Actually the whole band is great, it is a really great album

And still I cannot think who this band could be.

I am a rock music enthusiast with fair knowledge about rock bands and musicians from that era until now.

I hope someone can help, I have been searching for the answer to this for many years.

Regards.

The original Lifetime album is different from its many re-issues. I know, I have owned at least two different versions of the album myself, and if I recall correctly, I believe I have seen others.

The album you picture above is not the original, but a re-issue that emphasized Jack Bruce's sometime participation in the group.

P.S. As pointed out earlier, Lifetime is a Tony Williams band. the band changed personal over the years.

Reminds me of how I found Tim Buckley's music for the first time: on a mispressing LP -- bought secondhand -- of The Doors' Soft Parade, where side one was actually from Buckley's superb Happy Sad, as I found out some time later. Smile

I don't have an answer to your question. Have you written down the track lengths and compared them to all possibilities, concentrating on the Polydor releases of the same era? And do you have the printing year of that mispressing LP, to have at least the other end of the timeline closed?

All about the album is the TWL but the music doesn't seem to be, though.
I always thought it was because I didn't know the originls.
But after having heard samples of the original albums, and indeed of the same compilation vinyl album I found for sale, it is altogether different music.

Can you post samples of the music in question. Its possible you have a mis-pressed album. I have a Marvin Gaye album that has a totally different band on one side of the album.

That certainly isn't Tony Williams Lifetime. Lifetime could play circles around this band.
Sounds like a recorded rehearsal to me, one microphone in a rehearsal room, or a recording taken from something playing through speakers. Sounds like you can hear room ambiance, and the recording quality is murky. The playing is okay, but this might be a local band, not a national act.
I have no idea who the band is, and they may not be particularly well known either.

Thanks for the comment.
This was recorded with my iPhone, in my lounge, while playing the CD I have (which is an MP3 copy from the original LP) on my Hi Fi.
As for Lifetime playing circles around this band it's like saying Mahavishnu Orchestra were better than Van Halen, for instance. Simply a matter of personal taste and two totally different genres.
Lifetime played Fusion and this is Rock music...you know, apples and bananas?
This record is on Polydor label. Obviously a mispressing, but nonetheless it must have been a good enough band to have been signed up by that label. So, not really a bunch of amateurs, as you imply.

Well that explains the sound issues.
If no one else recognizes this band, then your best bet is to look up Polydor releases around the same time as the Lifetime record.
