Yep, I'm with you, Sam, `Obscured by Clouds' is lovely. Perhaps not a particularly important Floyd album, and that final track is the least interesting part of the album, but the LP is lovely and melodic with pleasing tunes and cool instrumental bursts. Always loved it, always will.

And I'd take it a million times over something like the overworked overproduced AOR blandness of `A Momentary Lapse of Reason' and the way every track pretty much ends on a fade-out...the least honest and genuine Floyd album by far. And that's coming from someone who doesn't actually hate it!

The last track could be better without the chanting in the end though. I'd take most of this album over the first side of Meddle.

Considering it was released in the cold/bland late 80's, it's not that bad. I'll take it over Invisible Touch any day :P

I would absolutely take all of `Obscured by Clouds' over the first side of `Meddle' too. A mix of pleasant if forgettable tracks and a fairly uninteresting studio version of a track where every single live recording of it EVER wiped the floor with it!

Yeah, `AMLoR' is probably better than `Invisible Touch' I suppose! But I'm surprised, I actually wondered with your new-found poppier 80's appreciation you might have been a little more forgiving of it now!

^ I tried again recently, I couldn't get past the third track. I was able to hear the self-titled until the end but it didn't make much for me. I think they didn't have anything new or edgy to say musically in the 80's, even if they used new technology, etc. The early 80's Synthpop sounds more interesting to me, even if the compositions are simpler.

There are no rubbish tracks on AMLOR... just a rubbish album

Gilmour's weakest solo album that he turned into a Floyd-named affair to prove that he owned the name.

Only one passable track on it: the opening instrumental, which is a parody of Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

The last part of ritual on tales. I like tales as a whole but that part just seems a bit sleepy and too romantic for the rest of the album.

not a fan of the drum solo of Ritual, and the last part can indeed be skipped

The only track I do like on TFTO is The Ancient, which FINALLY showed something different in tree albums, but again the folkish last third of the track can be easily skipped, since it has NOTHING to do with the first 12 minutes

As for the other two tracks on disc 1, they're best forgotten.

I think you guys are crazy! The drum solo on its own is a little annoying, but I think it creates some lovely tension and release once they go into the soft part of the song. And then it builds up and Steve Howe plays a great solo which very neatly wraps up the entire album.

"Resurrection" on Manfred Mann's Angel Station is terrible... arguably the lyrics are fun and the music somehow fits the lyrics but still it makes me cringe... and on Chance they even topped that with Heart on the Street (but then that album has quite a few stinkers).

I always thought that Les Boys on Making Movies by Dire Straits was quite a weak song to end on - not rubbish exactly but not as good as the rest of the album.

I also think the last two tracks on the GG albums Octopus and Freehand are relatively weak. I have grown to like "the river" a bit more these days but it still is not as strong as the rest of the album. Same thing with the last track on Freehand(maybe last two tracks)if I'm not mistaken.

Not prog - but Bruce Springsteen does have a tendency to end many albums on a slower, downbeat track. On many albums (such as The River, with Wreck on the Highway) it works well and has a melancholic counterpoint to much that came before. However, at times the choice is twee, over-sentimental or too much of a downer. Pony Boy on Human Touch or Valentine's Day on Tunnel of Love are examples. Sometimes, like Froggie come a Courtin' on the Seeger Seesions, it is skip track time. Surprise, Surprise on Working on a Dream, is just misjudged.

Of course, he has got it right a lot of times too! Jungleland from Born to Run is the way to end an album!

Gotta go with The Queen on GG's Debut.
Piper at the gates of dawn ends with Bike, which I quite enjoyed the first few listens but it got annoying quick.

Last time I listened to Tormato it sounded like an album of poor closers. Never listened to a Yes album that had me actually disliking it more. Very depressing. The only thing that made it better was the bonus cuts of the unreleased follow up which were much worse (no wonder JA and RW left then). Now there are some album closing stinkers for you.

Not quite as keen on ELP's comedy numbers (Benny and Eddie just in case clarification was needed) but the near Beth experience of BOCs Debbie Denise was a real let down. Only Sabbath's appalling Changes (better on the later version - it's not so much Ozzy does Elton). Not an album closer so it doesn't count; this number follows Wheels Of Confusion and the effect is that of an appalling closer. But if it was (e.g. on a compilation - then it would...

Oh, and more risque - loved Follow You Follow Me and It. Genesis not being limited by the confining expectations of their audience. Humour, melody and groove, kiss of death to the more militant male fans of metal and prog.

Rubbish last track? I think you'd have to go a long way to beat The Grand Vizier's Garden Party off Floyd's 'Ummagumma' album. Sorry, Nick - we love you dearly but that wasn't one of your greatest moments.

I might have nominated Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast from 'Atom heart Mother', but I played it recently and thought the 3rd and final piece of music in it (before the dripping tap fade) was gorgeous, and a fitting end to the album.

Speaking of last songs, Ritual (Nous sommes du soleil) was the wrap-up to the July 1976 concert I attended at Balboa Stadium in San Diego. Noticeable were the large throngs of fans heading towards the snack bars not too long into TFTO's last number. The lackluster performance was a relative anticlimax to the proceedings.

Small world!  I saw Yes at their next show at the Cow Palace 7/20/76!  I remember them playing Ritual, and while it's my least favorite song from Tales, I didn't move from my seat and don't recall anyone else bailing for the snack bar...of course I do remember strongly considering it during Jon's harp solo LOL
