This time I'm using this denofgeek article as my base, as I think it's a very good list and it saves me some thinking, but I do think it's too US-centric...

I wanted to add many others, but ran out of space. Was going to include Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959 bad film that I genuinely enjoy). Okay, I just added it to another option which is a highly regarded film, so rather a funny juxtaposition. I'll stoop there. I do wish there were more non-English language films in this list and some are more monster movie than science fiction.

I would have liked to expand more to horror, since I actually had things in mind like The Creature From the Black Lagoon when I started this, but there's so much stuff to cover so I narrowed my scope.

Multiple choice enabled, and I guess if you like both options in some of the "Poll Choice" lines, then vote twice. It's not a contest, the poll is merely intended as an accessory to discussion.

"Night of the Demon" would probably not count as SF. the line between SF and horror was thin in the 50s

Good film, I already edited, but maybe a horror one of the 50s would be good.

Wow, these bring back memories. I haven't seen most of these since I was a kid.

Went with The Thing but lots of good ones here. ( & some that are so bad, they're good!)

"Night of the Demon" has just one flaw: That the demon is shown. The director originally did not want to show it, but the producer insisted on it. Cursed be all producers!

Journey to the Centre (too bad they didn't hire 10 year old Rick Wakeman to do the soundtrack Wink) > War of the Worlds > 20,000 Leagues...

easy: Forbidden Planet.   The template for sci-fi cinema even decades afterward.

Though I do love many of the others.   Incredible Shrinking Man is an extraordinary film that is as good (and as good-looking) as it ever was.   That's quite an achievement.

War of the Worlds, though Americanized, is also excellent.

THEM! Has always been my favorite.

to take the place of the mud shark in your mythology...

As far as pure sci-fi Forbidden Planet is my favorite from that list....also like Them, Day The Earth Stood Still, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Quatermass, and The Thing....

Hi,

Always thought that FORBIDDEN PLANET is probably the best of these films, and it was probably so serious when it was made that I think they added the fun bits with the robot, just to lighten it up.

It was a special film all along ... the first all electronic soundtrack which I think made a lot of people not quite at ease, and then ... the un-credited stuff done by Disney's studios, who apparently did not want to be associated with the film.

The original THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is also really nice and still very enjoyable.

The English contingent from the 50's also got a real big push in comedy from the Goons, btw ... and it was actually funnier at times, than the films themselves.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

oh I'm calling bullsh*t on that Friede...

if there had been no demon... would anyone remember that movie today.  Of course not.. I mean that was seriously scary sh*t for back in that day.

Without it it was.. well...  a movie lost entirely in the sands of time.

From the list:
Them!
The Day the Earth Stood Still
The Thing, From Another World (the original and still the best)

Missing:
The Amazing Colossal Man
Earth vs. the Flying Saucers
The War of the Worlds (original)

The Amazing Colossal Man is not on the list, but Earth vs. the Flying Saucers and the 1953 War of the Worlds is on the list (unless by "original" you mean that there is a The War of the Worlds film that predates 1953). Gort's laser-sharp vision might need some adjustment (j/K). ;)

^ I like the music, but it doesn't fit the action well.

^^ David, I love that Attack of the Puppet People movie poster (would love to have that on my wall).
