Hey all,

So I'm not Christian,but... I am morbidly curious. Is Christian prog rock a thing?

I am familiar with After The Fire and Iona, and I know that Petra most certainly took inspiration from prog bands (though ended up on the Arena band side of things).

But wondering if it is a thing? Any recommendations? I am curious mostly about the Golden Era of prog (late 60's-70's) so any bands from that era are particularly appreciated.

Check out the band Akacia. Christian neo prog.

Farpoint is folk prog with a touch of symphonic prog. They aren't overtly Christian, but there are definite Christian influences present.

Former Kansas songwriter Kerry Livgren is Christian and that shows up prominently in most of his solo albums.

If you like early Rush at all, you have to check out Trytan's first album, Celestial Messenger. It's straight up Christian and the music is more hard rock than prog, but it is proggish. But it has an uncanny resemblance to Rush, right down to the Rickenbacker-toned bass lines and the high pitched vocals.

Not a Rush person (of any era of theirs to be honest). But I'll check them out nonetheless.

I know about Kerry, though I never have really considered Kansas prog tbh. I know John Elefante also ended up forming the Christian band Mastedon and it is supposedly proggish.

"Christian" is about lyrics, not about music as far as I can see.

Nevertheless, there are some prog rock artists with Christian lyrics. The most recommendable are Neal Morse and Iona.

Glass Hammer.  Bassist Steve Babb is out front with his beliefs.  

How much does your faith come into play with writing for Glass Hammer? Is it easier to put your heart out there and not have it shouted down by the mainstream than it was years ago? I look at a guy like Neal Morse, and it seems he is as well loved as a Christian artist as he was back with Spock’s Beard.

Steve: Glass Hammer is not a Christian band and we do not play Christian music. We are Christians who play in a band and my lyrics are shaped by my world-view, which happens to be a Christian world-view. I think it’s important to make the distinction. I have never felt comfortable marketing my music to “the church”. I want Christians to gravitate to us naturally when possible and I want non-Christians to be able to enjoy our music without feeling like they’re being evangelized. If my faith shines through the music of Glass Hammer, and non-Christian listeners pick up on it and are interested – fantastic! That’s my hope. We’re just providing entertainment for proggers and in a way that is not sneaky at all, and not overtly preachy – Glass Hammer points the way. Lex Rex is the closest thing to just “putting it out there” that we’ve ever done. If we do a Part Two (and I have ideas for that), we’ll be putting it out there again. But only because the story involves a Roman soldier’s confrontation with Jesus Christ. It’s just a story, just a legend, and just my take on it. It’s still not the Gospel.

Neal Morse is the obvious one. But another band worth checking out is Theocracy.

Most Christian prog is mediocre. Just as most religous people (and rich people) have terrible music taste (and collections - if any at all.)

There is a book on rare Xian rock/prog/psych. Good luck finding a copy in the wild.
