I would venture to say that most Sabbath fans on the planet would disagree with you. I would even go further to say most human beings living or dead would disagree with you.

Actually, I know a lot of Sabbath fans who agree. For one, RJD has the greatest voice in metal, a definite upgrade over Ozzy's nasal wail.
I would use the word "nonsense", but that wouldn't be polite. There is no way in Heaven or Hell that Dio can be considered an "upgrade" to 1970s Ozzy.

Having seen both Ozzy with Sabbath on the 1974 Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Tour and Dio with Sabbath on the '82 Black and Blue Tour, there really isn't a comparison. When Ozzy sang songs (and I'll just give singular instances from a few albums) like their titular "Black Sabbath", "Hand of Doom", "Into the Void", "Under the Sun", "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" or "Megalomania", there was an inherent malice, an evil presence that was as much Ozzy's shriek and snarl as were the vicious riffs Tony Iommi was spitting out on every song. It's what every metal band named after guts or phlegm or menstruation or whatever has aspired to sound like thereafter, but which just sounds like silly Halloween growls with sped-up Sabbath riffs.

Dio? Never was scary. He was like Scott Evil: "You're quasi-evil. You're semi-evil. You're the margarine of evil. You're the Diet Coke of evilJust one calorie."

Yes two very distinct vocal personalities. And if you're looking for pure evil incarnate, 70's Ozzy is gonna' be your guy.  But this is music after all, and ya' gotta' admit, that little Dio elf had a monster set of pipes.  Range and power Ozzy could only dream of.

As a huge fan of the first two Dio-era albums (I count Heaven and Hell as one of my Top 10 albums of all time), I have to agree with Greg here. The main reason why I've never been able to warm to Live Evil is that RJD's voice just did not work on the band's Ozzy-era classics. Songs like "Iron Man" or "War Pigs" are Ozzy's and Ozzy's alone, and no one else can do them justice. Dio, as great a voice as he had, was not at his best when singing other people's material. His performance of "Mistreated" on Rainbow's live album offers further proof of that. Being a technically gifted singer does not mean your voice will work equally well on all kinds of material.

Oh agreed with regard to Live Evil.  Dio just couldn't deliver those Ozzy songs with any authenticity.

Live Evil. Yeah. First of all don't nick your album title from Miles. Second, don't try and deliver songs designed for the vocal cords of the undead stoner doom king of Birmingham if your vocalist is a 3’ tall opera-singing elf from New Hampshire.
Soldato of the Pan Head Mafia. We'll make you an offer you can't listen to.

did you say moderation? Surely you weren't talking about this site were you.  Point in case, myself, who never once has been banned and there were times I was trying to get the f**king admins to do so.

Oh, I've never been banned either. Although I seem to recall having several posts edited for opinions detrimental to the imbeciles I was mocking.

You bet I didWink! I had already read about that somewhere, and thought it was one of the most idiotic proposals I'd heard in a long time. As you aptly wrote in your post, Tolkien would've been the first to disagree with the idea.

Anyway, I voted for the Sabs - and I like Rush quite a bit. Great music is not just a question of technical proficiency, as also illustrated by early Pink Floyd.

several.. I would have thought more. Then again you came a bit late to the O.K Corral. You would have loved it and likely would have been drafted into my team of cutthroats, knee breakers and ass kickers. This site was truly wild early on.

oh you are talking to the undisputed king of hidden, and delted posts.. along with the never be touched record holder of deleted PM's from admins threatening me to lay off the women, children and limp dicked.

Good times...

yeah... right darling. Back on topic.

an easy vote for Sabbath. It takes more than the Necromancer to top what Sabbath did.

Nope.  You're dead wrong dude!  Dio was the double Black of evil...... nuff said.

For me, Sabbath's best album is Reunion. It's got just about the best songs from the 70's, and are upgraded and made much heavier. I enjoy just about all of them over their studio versions. On the other hand, I do consider Dio to be a much better singer.

I think thatīs the main problem for me. That sound Sabbath got with Ozzy is the only Sabbath sound to me. Dio-albums reminds me his later own band sound. Nothing against it, but it just havenīt ever hit me like that earlier Sabbath sound. I really love also their 13 album, but all the other Sabbath albums have never hit me.
