Back by popular demand, live by request, the VH1 Storytellers edition of Side 1 Track 1 Shootout! Joining us again are ELP, Tull, and Yes, who received the fewest votes in Vol. 1.
And for that one guy in the Vol. 1 thread: HERE IS YOUR ZAPPA (wink wink wink wink wink we will have more for sure).
I think we all know that Yes is going to run away with this thing, but here we are. |

Hmmm. I have a weak spot for opening sections of an album and often the first track is my favourite. Now four out of this selection are actually sidelong, which seems a bit unfair. I'll rate them according to their album opening qualities (obviously as I hear them, subjectively). Freefall works well as an opener but is a bit bland and when ranking the songs on the whole album it may end up last. I'm not impressed with the starts of 2112 and CTTE; 2112 has a rather lame prelude (I'm not against starting at low profile and getting more intense later but this one, no) and CTTE starts with instrumental posing and gets much better only later. The other three have really marvellous but very different ways of starting off. All of them get me from the very beginning. Hard to pick between them really. While as a full track I'd pick TAAB, my vote goes to Zappa because this is a proper opener rather than a well opened full album side. |

It is rather strange to think of many of these as openers when they take up about half an album. So, it's down to which one I like best.....Close to the Edge, the first half of Thick as a Brick or Tarkus? I think Yes have to edge it once again.
Interestingly, The very start of 2112 - Overture/Temples... (live version especially) is my favourite bit of the whole epic. If we were talking just the first few minutes of all these side-long tracks, it might have got my vote. |

Yeah, I knew there would be some gripes with the side-long bits, but whatever. Is it side one? Yes. Is it track one? Yes.

Would have been a tough choice if CTTE hadn't been on here, but that piece is pure ecstasy. No question.
