There's literally millions of talented musicians that has come and gone throughout the decades. If these gifted musicians recorded an awful lot of awful material and gets a lot of praise for it - that would fit my idea of overrated. Its exactly how I would use the term on the music and albums created by the extremely talented musicians in ELP, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Billy Cobham-solo...

This.

I personally LOVE Mahavishnu, but I would definitely still call them overrated for the reasons you've mentioned hear.

Virtuosity doesn't preclude the ability to be overrated.

They aren't mutually exclusive.

Dream Theater is overrated for the same exact reasons IMHO.

The only prog band I can think of that I find overrated is Ayreon. Every time this guy releases something, everyone goes crazy with praise. Arjen has been doing the same recipe since 1995 and he gets away with it every time.

I have the same feeling with Steven Wilson.

Nothing wrong with his projects, in fact I love Blackfield and some Porcupine Tree's albums.

But sometimes he's considered some kind of god.
The thing about Porcupine Tree I love the most is not even Steven Wilson. It's Barbieri en Harrison, hahaha.

His Jethro Tull remixes are really great though. I wish he would do BJH and Camel next :D

^ unlike Arjen, Steven experiments a bit, tries not to repeat himself. At least he's trying.

^^I would have quoted Sapper and Frenetic but captcha is a pain in the ass so.......
the problem is how do we define overrated since we only rate the albums here and not actually the band itself. Their first 4 albums certainly deserve 4 stars imo and the rest are not rated all that well...certainly not an overrated bunch of albums imho. I don't see these bad albums getting praise btw.
If we define it by all the praise that ELP allegedly has received over the years then we also have to take into consideration all the negative comments...including those here regarding being overrated. Love those circular arguments.
As I have already pointed out there is a wide diversity of opinions posted here at PA from all over the globe and it is what it is.....unless there is some conspiracy to overrate bands including ELP...then it's simply subjective bias both for and against.
I also don't think MO or Cobham are overrated....they have done some great albums and some so-so ones and ratings reflect that imo.
One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

Regarding Wilson....who the hell considers him a 'god'...can I see some quotes in print..?
He certainly has a lot of fans but so does that crappy singer Hammill......so I guess there's no accounting for taste..?

But I think otherwise and don't mind a discussion based largely on subjectivity. If i claim something is overrated I should have something to back that claim up with. Others may of course disagree with me. Some from a well informed point of view while others from total lack of experience and knowledge. A young person stating that Ed Sheeran is the best artist ever or that Paulo Coelho is the best author are correct from their perspective, but I will automatically suspect that they haven't really heard that much music or read many books. By that I logically consider Ed Sheeran and Paulo Coelho to be overrated by those who settle with/or only know the basics. You can take my line of thought from there and apply it to all levels within Jazz, Prog, Classical or whatever.

For all micky's gushing and opinions stated as facts I'm kinda disappointed with ELP. For me Lake & Emerson are great musicians and Palmer is an ok drummer (too mechanical and in love with solo's for my personal tastes). But the music they produced is too focused on technical showmanship with not enough hooks, experimentation or anything that grabs me. I enjoy Tarkus & BSS but I'm in no rush to get anything else.

I still think the first album is the best...before they became full of themselves.

I wouldn't call Barclay James Harvest overrated.

Even the fans know they are middle-of-the-road.
Just a basic 70's dad-rock band. I like it a lot though.
Although when they sounded more like the Bee Gees then themselves, I lost interest.

John Lees is now fronting a band, that continues the sound of Once Again/Octoberon, wich I think is great.
I think he has at least 1000 fans worldwide. :D

Every Tech/Extreme Prog Metal band on this website seems to be overrated.

Agree with Cristi. Even though I don't like most RIO/Avant/Zeuhl and I'm a bit indifferent towards krautrock, that doesn't mean every single band that fits into any of those subgenres is overrated.
Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.
