Annette Peacock (you can file her under Bruford, if you will)

Great suggestion, but that's more of a guest appearance. Three songs on one album isn't enough for me on this one. |
Wait !!! She's already here, as solo artist, doesn't that count ? (same for Carla Bley)

I was hoping to discover such as well but extreme seems to be a male thing i guess. I've always heard that male energy is unpredictable lightning bolt energy (like Zeus) and female energy is grounding. If you want extremem female bands you have to look to punk and metal like Pussy Riot! Metal actually has a surprisingly amount of women including death metal (which there are some on my list)

Great finds! Japanese women are some of the most daring and bold on the scene. Love their feistiness! All great and added. Paranoid Void definitely belongs on this site!

Oh, I hear you there! Hell, arguably my current favorite guitarist is Hanako from Octaviagrace, but unfortunately their style is probably just a little too power metal for "prog" standards (man is she great though).
Here's a couple of more individual Japanese wunderkinds that need serious consideration though:
Starless: Yoshiko Miyamoto (vocals) Named after the KC album, their Silver Wings album is one of the best Japanese heavy prog albums of the '80s. Seriously classic stuff.
Although you might kick yourself for not catching this one considering their regal status in the E/T prog metal scene... Sigh: Dr. Mikannibal (alto saxophone, vocals)
aah Japanese women proggers... |
DOH! How could i miss Sigh. (sigh)
Starless added. Yet another band to check out. I have to live another 300 years

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Sorry, but Jefferson Airplane for prog is like having marshmallow rice krispies treats for Christmas dinner I'm not covering early psych and proto on this one :) | What about another list females in psych and prote? Too large? |
Great idea but a friend of mine has made a similar list and i even though i think he could do a more thoroughly job of it, i don't want to step on his toes in any way. There are a lot of similar lists on RYM for different styles of music but there was one missing for an all-encoming progressive rock list :)

RIP Dolores
I have never heard anything even remotely progressive from the Cranberries. There's no listings on RYM and they're not on here so i'll have to give them a pass unless you can point to something proggy :)

I did consider her but on RYM she is only listed as different styles of jazz. However i see she's on PA so apparently she had made it through our sensors and must have some rock in her swing, so WhyTF not?

Good one! Added. I've actually always loved Stürmischer Himmel but it doesn't seem to get a lot of love. Too weird. It belongs on that other list of trippiest music!
