New jazz albums from Ed Palermo and Hiromi and remastered issue of 'Fuse One'. Belated tribute to co-founder of Steely Dan, Walter Becker. Sampling the soundtrack to the Blade Runner sequel. New rock albums too, from Dhani Harrision, Yowie, Security Project and of course Jeff Beck. A  delve into the back recesses of the Archives with my discovery of Goodthunder.

Continuing to work through the promos that arrived over the summer break. A Loughborough Uni associated band wrt Cristobal & The Sea, which is a must to play. Left field music from King Krule, UUUU, Wolf Alice (coincidentally two of which are on Later this week). Gary Husband features twice, respectively as drummer then pianist, as our musician of the term. A belated change with the sad announcement of the death of Canterbury stalwart, Phil Miller in the last few days. New jazz from Dusan Jevtovic, Lettuce and the Kandinsky Effect. A dip into the much praised King Crimson Live in Chicago recorded only a few months ago. As promised more folk this week than last week. (Kim, some new PE & PET too).

Apologies for a late posting of the playlist. A few tracks that have featured before amongst a lot of new and recent releases. TYA celebrate their 50th Anniversary with a new album, with the great Colin Hodgkinson supplying bass. A supergroup, Sons of Apollo have just appeared, made up of ex members of Dream Theater and Journey,  plus shredder Bumblefoot. A short dip into the americana of Mr and Mrs Fleck. We continue to listen to the new Cuneiform Record releases. Several bluesy tracks to make up for the omission last week. The usual mix of unexpected musics.

Two big bands visiting locally in the next few weeks: Wishbone Ash and Soft Machine (Legacy), so a chance to play their music. The jazz funkers RCFP include bluesman Joe Bonamassa in their line-up, so checking this out (note: Eric Clapton didn't change in the presence of Wynton Marsalis). Anglo folk from Martin Simpson and a local group, the Barber Sisters, who I caught at Derby's Youth Folk Festival  some weeks ago. Dipping into the recent remasters from Flock, Ides Of March and It's A Beautiful Day - btw saving the newly released, limited edition Bruford boxset until next week.

As promised, several samplings of the Bruford boxset issued nearly 14 days ago. Thanks to Moonjune Records for the 'pay want you want' Soft Machine sampler (a reminder too, that the band appears at Derby's Flowerpot this Saturday).  Another interesting Manchester based band in the form of Minimal Hand. The Tom Waits ANTI Records discography is remastered and reissued between now and Christmas. Probably find space for at least one World Music artist(s) from now on, this week Mali's Filles De Illighadad. Archive raid for the Youngblood and Cold Blood records. If I write it myself, another interesting music mix coming this Thursday.

Three examples of Steven Wilson's remixing feature. Two examples of Allan Holdsworth remastered too. A couple of Beefheart interpretations from the new album by Nona Hendryx and Gary Lucas. Robert Lamm reworks early Chicago. A couple of new albums of instrumental prog from the (Djam Karet's) record label Firepool. Tom Waits remastered. Great new jazz from Aki Rissanen, Jon Balke and as a tribute to Terj Rypdal.

Have you notice how many 50th anniversary "deluxe" editions of classic (and not so classic) albums are being released, indeed a few have come this way and continue to be played? All have been remastered, some remixed, all with extra tracks, some stereo and mono mixes etc. The cynic would say: hey Christmas is coming and time for some nostalgia, not quite here (apart from squeezing more revenue from the fans).  So the Moody Blues and Doors have been retrieved from an easy access part of the archives. I strongly recommend the box set 'Let The Electric Children Play', an excellent review of the underground rock issued in the late 60's and early 70's by the British label, Transatlantic. Carry overs from several of last week's best albums played: Ellen Andrea Wang, Nona Hendryx and Gary Husband, BlitzenTrapper, and Herd Of Instinct. Plus the usual interesting mix of musics.

First apologies, for the non appearance of the ALT2 Show last week. There was due apparently to failure of our software to broadcast the pre-recorded show, and instead continued with the sustain programme... I was listening in West Wales.

This week: a continued catch up of the new, the reissued and the recorded music lurking in the archives. A quick glimpse of Jazzwise's jazz album of 2017: Cecile McLorin Salvant's 'Dreams & Daggers'. A great collation of Hendrix covers comes from ACT's recording artists. New electro jazz from the Danish band, Hess Is More. And breaking the rule not to play Christmas music this time year: Panzerballett attacks some favourites. Following my comments about the abundance of 50th and 40th Anniversary edition album being released for the Christmas market: Rush's 'A Farewell Of Kings' with the (inevitable) Steven Wilson remix. World music from Nguyen Le (Vietnamese) and Robert Plant (Arabic). And a further dip into that excellent 3CD set of Transatlantic Records' 60's and 70's recordings ('Let The Electric Children Play'), this time a couple folk tunes.

Found an excellent Norwegian band, Trojka who sound to have distant echoes of Canterbury's Machine and Hatfields and I've been playing non-stop this last weekend. A new albums from Slivovitz, and Wadada Leo Smith, back to his Miles influenced jazz fusion/funk. Mike Keneally joins Panzerballett for a metallised Christmas song. Interesting Nu Prog from bands, The Dear Hunter, Myrkur and Dialects. A request for more Pentangle is answered. And taken from a 12 CD set of composer Pierre Henry music, 'Polyphonies' is an excuse to play more from the challenging 'Ceremony'. BTW Graphite was found deep in the Archives. And of course the last track from our musician of the term, Gary Husband. Then there is a comparison of father and son Buckley. And, as a dear friend would say: beware of some recordings sounding like spanners in a washing machine..... but it won't be the ALT2 Show otherwise.

Happy New Year!

A new year and a new term. A catch up on 2017 releases and reissues. Remasters from Burton/Corea, Pat Metheny Group, Bob Dylan, Gil Scott-Heron, (plus Man from 2008). Excellent new jazz from bassist Linda May Hay Oh, Rez Abbasi. Jazz funk from the amusingly named Pigeons Play Ping Pong. After searching for a very long time I've got my fingers on Mick Pini's first album of 1989, with guest appearances by Paul Jones and Chris Youlden.  And then there is the Norwegian band that caught my ear at the end of 2017: Trojka. Finally what seems sad news, Cuneiform Records have announced they are not issuing any new albums in 2018. We have been great believers in the very special music that the label have issued and we have played; come back soon.

With the positive feedback to last week's music more from Linda May Hay Of, and (the remastered) Pat Metheny Group and Burton/Corea. Quite some enthusiasm for Typhoon's  new and 4th album Offerings, critics suggesting by mid January this is one of the best rock albums of 2018, even though this  concept album is of memory loss. Interesting offer from Kramer and Bill Frisell deconstructing some classic songs to come out of NYC's Tin Pan Alley. Dipping into a couple of sample albums; one covering the psychedelic period in San Francisco, the other providing a broad and deep review of female folk singers (but no Joni Mitchell?). And then there is another reminder of Rare Earth live.

A few weeks ago I, (along with many others), received a press release from Joyce, Cuneiform Records Press Officer. Steve Feigenbaum the brains behind Cuneiform, has decided that the label is taking a sabbatical for 2018, so he can consider the label's future. The loss even a temporary loss, of this label and it innovative quarterly releases, is a shock to me So one purpose of this week's ALT2 Show is remind listeners of some of those innovative, varied artists and albums that have appeared over the last couple of decades. These include the new and those that have lurked unreleased for far too long in some archives.... and Cuneiform have exposed  to the world. (In particularly here, those that I have especially enjoyed, and indeed you may have heard me play previously). Enjoy and don't forget to buy. Support Cuneiform Records!

It has been a good week for good new promos, and those included in this week's show: Vantomme, Kim Sajn (aka +1), Paula Rae-Gibson & Sam Leak (a deliciously erotic bit of poetry and free jazz), Ashton  Lane, Isildurs Bane and few ECM newies. Thanks to all who supplied. Thanks too to En and Gren for suggesting music from the archives, respectively, Il Baricentro and Djeli Moussa Diawara & Bob Brozman.

Continuing with a mix of the old from the archives and new releases, pleased to say we've got our fingers on the new GoGo Penguin album, further blurring boundaries between jazz and other genres. A dip into a couple of new ACT Records releases.... also Moonjune release in the form of Vantomme. A nice discovery of recordings made by the famous Radiophonic Workshop. More from the new Isildurs Bane album - thanks again to Thomas in Sweden for this. Then the usual unusual blend of musics.

More new releases, especially the jazz, including a couple of Shabaka albums and a is it jazz/or isn't it from Snowpoet. Local folk singer, Emma Buckley and her first ep - btw performing locally in Derby this Friday too. Then there is dip into a pair of American prog classics, recorded 30 years apart, ie. The Shaming Of The True and Touch.

(Weather permitting) tonight's show is mix of old and new. Belatedly reminded that Norway's heavy fusionists Elephant9, released a new album in January. Femi, son of the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti has a great new afrobeat jazz album. A new album by Al DiMeola is always welcome. Two tracks by Jen Shyu  both where she plays SE Asian instrumens. Tribute to jazz violinist Didier Lockwood. More from local folk singer Emma Buckley, who I saw live last Friday belting out 'Midnight Train To Georgia' (forthcoming gigs in the Derby area of the UK, are listed: this is for the locals). The 'old' comes from Love ('Forever Changes' celebrates it 50th Anniversary), Chapman Whitney, Black Keys and Swedish bluesman Jimmy Agren. And Everything Everything have a new ep out, as they just go on tour.
