Topic: The Football/Soccer Thread Posted: September 27 2017 at 10:17 |
Are there any football (or Soccer as our American friends call it) fans on here? I support Ayr United because they are my hometown team and like to attend their matches whenever I can. Ayr United compete in the third tier of Scottish football and have never won the Premiership title or any major cups so being an Ayr fan is hardly a glory-filled existence. I am proud to support them though.
Do you like football? Who do you support?

This has been tried here before and it has failed miserably. Apparently PA fans are not (real)football fans.
I'm a hardcore Futbol Club Barcelona fanatic.

I did wonder why I didn't see a thread about football. I should have took that as a sign lol.

Any thoughts on the World Cup draw? Quite happy with England's draw of Belgium, Tunisia & Panama. The tough groups look like France/Peru/Denmark/Australia, Brazil/Switzerland/Costa Rica/Serbia and Germany/Mexico/Sweden/Korea.
The Russia/Egypt/Uruguay/Saudia Arabia looks ridiculously easy, no team from the top 20 and 2 teams outside the top 60.

I'm not much of a soccer fan, but we did get some pretty big news this past week that Detroit is a finalist for a possible expansion team in the US Professional Soccer League. There hasn't been a professional soccer team in the Detroit area since 1981, except for a short period from 2007 - 2009 when there was a professional indoor soccer team. There was also a professional indoor soccer team from 1994 -1996, which I remember going and watching a couple/few times. The indoor soccer was pretty fun to watch, but it was more like watching a hockey game since it was contained in a smaller rink, and there was way more scoring of goals then in your typical outdoor soccer game.

Glad to hear of football still growing in the US. I used to love those crazy 35-yard penalty shoot-outs, sad to see it go.
As for the World Cup draw, as always, it's unpredictable. Glad you think group A is easy, I'm scared of us getting Russia or Uruguay in the playoffs. That is, if we make it through our group, of course.

You should certainly get out of the group no problem, top 2 really clear in that group, you should at least make the quarters when France or Argentina are likely opponents.

Kind of surprised by no one is mentioning the toughest group by far. It's the one with Croatia, Argentina, Nigeria and Iceland.

Well, we're in a hard group
France......9 in FIFA ranking Perú.......11 in FIFA ranking Denmark.....12 in FIFA ranking Australia....39 in FIFA ranking
But Paolo Guerrero is suspended for a year.
So anything can happen here.

That's certainly a brute of a group, especially as most people have France as third favorites behind Germany & Brazil.

football consumes both what good about society, spirit, heart, team effort, tirelessness and hope but also the vile things, poor acting, cheating, corruption and unfairness. It got it all which also makes it human.
