Jodie Whittaker was announced to be the first female doctor in Doctor Who. Are you happy? I am very happy, as this will open new doors for the show

In case you mossed it, I revived your Doctor Who thread to bring this topic up: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=107466&PN=2

I'm fine with a female Doctor, and am more concerned with the direction that the new showrunner, Chris Chibnall, takes. Hopefully the writing is strong and there is a strong story arc.

I have like every the Doctor thus far, though I have liked some more than others (I thought Capaldi excellent), and will reserve judgment. I've seen her in a few things, including Broadchurch, Black Mirror and Attack the Block.

Many have complained that it's been a politically correct move, and I can see why Chibnall's comments would concern people (like how he has said that he always wanted a female the Doctor) but if we really wanted to go PC she would be, say, Pakistani (I've seen many calls for the next Doctor to be black or of Asian ancestry). I think it's cool to have our first female the Doctor, and second? transgender (in a sense) regeneration. In Hell Bent, not only did a white male Time Lord turn female, but also black.

I do think that this move could get more people interested, so not only a PC move, but possibly quite a good PR move. The jury is out for me.   I will continue to watch, and the gender is not really an issue to me, especially if I like her characterization.

I don't really care if the Doctor is a man or a woman and Jodie Whittaker is a great actor. It all depends on the scripts so we'll see how it goes.

I am looking forward to the Christmas special and the new series. Don't think I have many nails left as I keep biting them with nervous anticipation.

But with all the doctors it all depends on how good the script is and if that storyline suits the actor playing the doctor.

I'm not happy or unhappy.....it will depend on the actor and the scripts...I think some will be disappointed if it doesn't fare well.
Traditionally of course it has always been a man...but I suppose the pressures of modern culture ,etc have created this scenario.

I'm not a fan of the renowned science fiction television series, but I don't think it's that big of a deal that she is the first female doctor. The way I see it, you should only pick someone if they show some skill and a willingness to do what they're about to do.

If the previous Doctors are anything to go by then she'll end up as an interesting idea wasted!
I mean how could you f**k up a perfect actor like Peter Capaldi in the job?
Just watch the three series he did. I went like this:
OK, great idea! Keep that going! Oh. What? Oh how he's owning it... And there goes his term in the role. Why do I bother with this!

Not looking forward to misogynistic comments about her and worse really not looking forward to being accused of being one of those haters if I'm not won over.

Not voted. Do have an opinion, but it's too early yet. She hasn't even been on and I don't think that her ten seconds or however long her regenerated scene is will be enough to form an opinion one way or the other.

I look forward to any new Dr Who episodes so I'll be watching in December here in the US ...but she won't really begin until after that I assume. I think a lot will depend on how well written the episodes will be.
