I whole-heartedly applaud every prog festival organizer who has ever walked the earth for their amazing contribution to the entire prog revival. Without people like Rob and Chad and Greg and Steve and George and the rest, a lot of us in prog bands would simply be nowhere. Progfest and NEARfest in particular have been essential to the growth of Scandinavian prog in the 90's and noughties.
It just seems that the time has come now for prog to find a new way. The festivals have become, as was mentioned, nostalgia get-togethers. They have been artificial life-lines for stagnant acts, rather than fertile grounds for new, exciting acts. And those organizers who have tried to feature some new blood have been punished by a rather backwards-looking audience. As with NEARfest this year. I don't think blaming either the audience, the organizers or the bands has any virtue. What I think, is that the prog umbrella for too long has tried to shelter two very different things under its shade: On the one hand, the nostalgia scene, which features both the old acts that are still around, like Yes and whatever Italian band you care to mention, and "old-new" bands like Flower Kings and Transatlantic - bands that, though newish, cater mostly to very conservative audiences. On the other hand, the new progressive scene, which could include anything from The Mars Volta to Gösta Berlings Saga, and which really isn't a scene at all, especially considering that many of the bands themselves have no awareness of being part of a "prog scene". These two strands really are extremely different. There's plenty of people with a love for both (including, to a certain extent, myself). But to throw the typical fans of both scenes (the former, ageing, follicle-challenged geezers - bless'em all!, the latter young, dynamic listeners brought up to endless eclecticism and irreverence to genres - bless them too!), might just be too much of a stretch. Maybe it's time for a divorce. Let the geezers have their nostalgia-fests, and let the "new prog" bands get out on the regular rock circuit and compete with any other rock genres out there rather than put them in the geriatric ward of "prog" where the smell of old age will make them unpalatable to both the rock media and the major labels. No disrespect to either!!! :-)
And as an a propos: Prog labels that sign new, fresh and exciting bands should be careful how they market and present the bands. Selling them in the traditional way ("washes of mellotrons, recall Eloy in their heyday, rave reception at Bolivia Art Rock Fest (BARF)") will, quite simply, sell them short. It's a new world out there.
Thank you for all this information, it is helpful. It even mentions Eloy.
Yeah I see bands talked about on here sometimes like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles.. which I don't consider Prog. The Beatles somewhat(they are very often cited by Prog artists as influence).
I really like Marillion though and it seems kind of split on here as to whether they(and other 'NEO' artists are considered fully Prog or not). Idk, I guess it shouldn't matter that much..
And no Micky, you are not boring lol. I have to give you that.

Thank you for answering. A Trick of the Tail, I love that album. But looks like most people date it starting with Marillion's debut album, that's cool.. must be why Micky dislikes them so much lol.

pfff... you aint' seen nothing man. Just wait till the press or one of my ex's leaks my videotapes of me in a black dress trolling bars for rich lonely men.... my ass was.. and still is in fact.. quite legendary. oh no... it doesn't matter a damn. As our belove Neo weenie squad have been wining.. and have for years... who cares.. enjoy what you like. Truth.
All this is just mental masturbation and an attempt to keep discussion on this forum from spiraling masturbating about the latest f**king SWilson album.
Yes there are two very distinct musical grouping included on this site. Prog rock.. and its most decidedly prog.. but progressive as my f**king right toe bands that monkey what other had done years previously.... and oh so much better. There is quite a large audience for that.... out there in real life... most certainly on this site.
There is the other camp... music that prog sites like this embrace.. and take under the umbrella... but often have their own fan base that is NOT the same as the traditional progger who melts over cryptic hippy bullsh*t lyrics and 20 minutes epics. What it is genre-irrevelvant. Why fans of prog may call it prog... the bands don't consider it prog... nor do fans of the music. It is just music they like... unlike us... they don't feel the need to slap labels on it. Like the good old days of the 70's.. good music was good music.. you had fans of ELP digging Stevie Wonder... Willie... whatever. Today it seems we have returned to that with the collapse o the industry as a major power who sold to us by breaking us, and the music, into easy to market and sell to groups of listeners.

Yeah I tried to get into Porcupine Tree and it was ok but didn't really take. I see a far amount of talk about them and Dream Theater on here but idk, I'll probably just stick with Marillion.
But you're right, shouldn't worry about what something's labeled.. either you like it or you don't.

awesome. Serously.. don't make the mistake of thinking I"m trying to tell you not to listen to them. My feelsing on Neo are my own, oh.. and of a great many others hahah.. but while we may have fun trashing Neo it is all just that... all in fun. It is the punching bag.. the class nerd... the guy who masterbates to PLayboy because he can't get a girl. It is the loser genre of prog hahah. We just enjoy teasing our friends on the forum that do enjoy it with our thoughts on their tastes.. and their manhoods hahah.
Personally I find very few redeeming qualities at all in their music or in any of the Neo I've heard. I've listened to many, all the Fish and a good many of the Hogwarts ones before I finally gave up.. did nothing for me and yeah... it isn't just a Marillion thing it is the whole damned Neo thing. What makes Neo Neo I suppose just doesn't click for me. It isn't progressive at all.. so that is a big swinging first strike. I have ZERO sentimetal ties to it... during those years I wasn't listening to it.. I was digging the great stuff coming out in the 80's that wasn't prog... nor Neo.. but sh*t all over this stuff in terms of catchiness, songwriting, and just plain being fun to listen to. When I am in the mood to dig prog.. why ever would I want to listen to this sophmoric sh*t.... the classics rules over this stuff... and even more.. the newer stuff is much more progressive (ie interesting) and is more fresh and exiting.
In a nutshell.. that is why I think they suck. Not that you should or will agree.... if you enjoy them.. do it... the only enjoyment I get is trashing them and their fans for their lack of tastes hahaha. I've been doing for years... the fans know it... and think they enjoy it actually. I am like free advertising.. otherwise Neo would sink back to the 3rd division of prog where it belongs.. instead of being the center of attention it is when Mick and his Neo hating skinheads descend on anything Neo related.

It's not that Neo is bad, it's that it's generally cheap music. By definition, Neo-Prog is a revivalist movement i.e. it tries to imitate Classic Prog. The result is often generic uncreative music (often not always).
That said I do like Marillion more than any other Neo band I've heard. Quite enjoyable actually. But it sounds so close to a Genesis rip-off that I almost never spin any of their albums. Those kinds of artist lack a sense of identity and need to stop treating art as a commodity.

I just don't buy into that Progressive vs Prog thing, and considering them two different things. For me Prog is just the short for progressive rock, and that's all. I guess there's the problem of progressive as an adjective vs progressive as the rock sub-genre, and people then want to force the definition of the word progressive into the genre, while it is not always necessarily so. Perhaps they should have stuck with the name "Art Rock" or something of the sort.

You shouldn't care so much about what other people think of genres or bands if you like them. I mean, you are in a prog forum, if you went around choosing your what you like and what you don't based on others opinions, then you shoulen't even be listening to prog at all. However, I use opinions to point me in a direction when I'm trying to find new music, but once I listen to it I make my own choices. Or else I check the opinions just for curiosity of the music I know, but won't change my mind just because someone else doesn't like it (in that case I would love Peter Gabriel and hate Jon Anderson as singers).

what is there not to buy man.... read that guys post.... he was dead on. The proof is right in front of our faces. You have two distinct types of music.. prog which is genre.. and progressive which is an adjective.. NOT a genre... and with them you do have two groups of fans.... and while some of us do like both... putting the two together does not always work.
see Nearfest 2011 and the collapse of the big tent prog scene which tried to place two very different beasts in the same ring...... seeing that was all the proof in the pudding one would need to see what can happen when prog and progressive diverge...

You don't love Peter Gabriel? I mean I'm not trying to judge, love who you want obviously but I sure love him! I love Jon Anderson too obviously, but if I have to pick between the two then I'm going with Gabriel. Aside from that though, thanks again for the guidance.

I prefer the classic stuff as well. I consider Yes the best prog band, but Genesis is my personal favorite. I like Neo as well though.
