Topic: MGMT Prog? Posted: June 01 2017 at 21:59 |
Now before you go off on me let me explain. Some of MGMT's work is fairly proggy in my opinion. In fact they are the band that really made me explore the prog genre (Found out about King Crimson through one of their band interviews). In particular songs like Siberian Breaks, Metanoia, Lady Dada's Nightmare. Now, I kind of consider them to be as close to prog as The Beatles (prog influences but not exactly prog). I'm just wondering what you guys think?

They're very good. I love their third album but that's a bit more techno than Prog. "I Love You Too, Death" is a really satisfying listen. Glad to hear they are coming back.

I own Oracular Spectacular and Congratulations. I don't hear anything prog according to the definition of the site. They are an intesteing modern version of synthpop that melds with neo-psychedelia and indietronica. I like their earliest stuff the best but they don't meet the criteria of being included on this site. Sorry

Hey, if people insist on calling bands like Tame Impala or Temples Prog then why not MGMT? Love all three of their albums though (especially Congratulations. Any album with a song called "Brian Eno" can't be all bad!)

They're progish. If these guys mature in the manner that Talk Talk matured, then maybe we can talk about it.

A quick search in the New Bands section shows at least 3 previous submissions for MGMT. I didn't read through them but I guess they didn't make it.

Tame Impala and Temples are generally referred to as psych pop. At least by fans of psych pop, prog fans say their music is prog. Same with the Flaming Lips. So, it seems to be up to a genre's fans as what music is produced by these bands. Now that seems fair, doesn't it?

Sorry to bump an old thread, but the band are back with new material. The lead video for "Little Dark Age" is more synth than Prog. But the just released video for "When You Die" is the best thing I've heard for ages and the video should win awards for best anything! Can't embed on this Tablet, but remind yourself one day to see the video on YouTube for "When We Die" on a large a screen as possible. EDIT: JUST REMEMBERED NSFW LYRIC AT ONE POINT!! Be back to this thread when "Little Dark Age" releases in 2018.

Well I bought the album and it's a really enjoyable 44 minutes to say the least. Owes more to the electro-pop than the fuzzy (But enchanting fuzzy) of their third album. And at parts sounds like a more Techno version of "Congratulations". It's like they've never been away. The singles are stacked at the front of the album leaving the rest of the album to blossom. Should be on Spotify at least and all I really ask is you listen to it twice as any doubts or contention you had goes away with repeated listening. Haha, who knew that happened, eh?

at least not the first two times haha...
and yeah.. after getting rid of Capcha.. 'rewarding' the E&O team for their unappreciated unsung grunt work for the site and promoting them to admins... number 3 on my list as new site owner is doing what should have been done a decade ago...
streamlining and simplifying the addition process.. genre teams stopped being useful once we got 99.9% of the classics found, evaluated, and added.
somewhere along the way the site forgot it was about the user... not the egos and fiefdoms of the collabs.
