Topic: Petition for Real-Time Chat Posted: December 24 2004 at 18:32 |
Hey, I was thinking, since so many people frequent the forums, why not
have a real-time chat? That way, we could talk about our favorite
topics instantaneously as opposed to over many days, and we could also
get to know each other better.
What do you say?

All:
The admin group is discussing this possibility when the site is "re-vamped" in early 2005. Note, however, that if a real-time chat room is instituted, it will almost certainly be moderated - not to "control" people or what they want to discuss, but to keep discussions "on point" and prevent any unnecessary (and inappropriate...) "unpleasantness"...
We will provide updates as we go forward.
Peace.

I would honestly prefer to have it be moderated anyway... that would help it be worthwhile!

i'm not afraid of anything *beats chest like big bad bear*
if there was no mod it'd turn into bland insulting or cyber-sex.
knowing this group it would probably be some strange combination of the
two.

I am not entirely sure live chat would be a good idea. This is based on experience with other live chats.
1. You would need a lot of memebers online simultaniously for it to have any chance of working.
2. The discussion would no doubt drift from the subject of prog onto an entirely different subject.
3. You can discuss and subject on live chat in 2 or mins that would normally run for at least a day in the forum.
4. It is very hard to put your point across as you have to write short sentances before someone cuts in.
5. You cannont refer back to what was written so if you are not there to see it you miss it.
Both forums and live chat was suggested but i think this would just adversly effect both. Just my opinion by the way, it is entirely up to admin at the end of the day. I hope that they would do plenty of researsch before taking such a big step.

Will:
As former moderator of a major TV-based chat room for lmoat a year and a half, I agree with some of your assessments. As noted, the admin group is discussing this possibility; that doesn't mean it will definitely be instituted.
Still, if we can "iron out the bugs" - at least to the degree that we think it will work well - we could set it up and, if it ends up being too unwieldy, we can always eliminate it.
As noted, we will update members as we get closer.
Peace.
P.S. to Jester: Hysterical!

maybee we can just have it for fun. it would be alot easier to just learn more about the other members and interact with them if there was online chat.
