They get a bit tiring after a while. At least this one breaks from consensus a bit especially since it includes Fragile and not CTTE. However, I can't take any list like this too seriously if it doesn't include CTTE. |
Fragile is an ‘okay’ album. It’s nowhere near one of my favorite Yes albums. For me, Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans, and Relayer are their best albums. I do like Going for the One quite a bit.

See, I do like Fragile quite a bit and maybe partly because it's one of the first I heard it's one of my personal favorites. That said it's not their DSOTM more like their Animals. Their DSOTM would be CTTE. I would maybe put it above TFTO. The complaint I hear from a lot of prog fans(and Yes fans)regarding Fragile is the shorter pieces don't work and sound out of place or whatever. I think the shorter pieces add a certain charm to the album and make it more interesting. Much of CTTE, as great as it is, is rather repetitive especially SK and the title track. I'm not sure if I would put Fragile above TYA though. It might be a tie.

My general problem with Fragile is it lacks a certain continuity. I don’t mind shorter pieces, but the fact that this album is more like a showcase for each of the members, for me, goes against the kind of narrative one feels in Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans, and Relayer. I do love some of Fragile, especially pieces like South of the Sky, Long Distance Runaround, Heart of the Sunrise, and, of course, the ever-popular Roundabout. I mean it’s not a ‘bad’ album or anything of the sort. I do enjoy it from time to time. It’s just not a favorite.

8 best prog albums? Wow, tough call.
1. JT - Thick As A Brick 2. Minimum Vital - Esprit D'Amor 3. Tangerine Dream - Rubycon 4. Renaissance - Scheherazade And Other Stories 5. Magma - Udu Wudu 6. Gentle Giant - The Power And The Glory 7. Illusion - Out Of The Mist 8. Riverside - Love, Fear And The Time Machine
(I can think of 1000 prog albums that are possibly more historically worthy than the Riverside album I put at #8, but it has lately been in my hifi and iPod and I cannot get enough of it.)

I'm not sure you've got enough Anglagard there...

Almost there. Replace WYWH with DSOTM. Get rid of Tales and put in Marillion's Afraid of Sunlight.

No way! Never knew this guy also was involved in music let alone a movie soundtrack. I know what I'm watching tonight.

Completely forgot about this thread, and I started it without giving my fave 8. So, here they are (no order except for the first; Godbluff is the greatest rock album of all time).
1) Godbluff (VdGG) 2) Still Life (VdGG) 3) MDK (Magma) 4) Kontarkohz (Magma [I'm sure I botched that spelling]) 5) Time & A Word (Yes) 6) Troutmask Replica (CB) 7) Tago Mago (Can) 8) A Grounding In Numbers (VdGG)
I did this in 40 seconds... so many I like that aren't on here (Exposure by Fripp; Ege Bamyasi; etc). I would choose five albums by VdGG, Can, Magma, Hammill each. But I love the other stuff as well (Lick My Decals Off comes to mind; Cartoon's "Music From Left Field"...AD2 "Yeti"... urrrggggg!!! 8 isn't enough! ;-)
