I want to throw Tony Iommi in for honorable mention as well-prog related

Clap Mick Box & Tony Iommi smoke them
You may see a smile on Tony Banks´ face but that´s unlikely.

Ouch! Actually, there are a lot of things that sound like a keyboard that are actually guitar, and a lot places where the guitar is not front and center, but is adding critical coloring to the sound.

Clap Steve Hackett smokes many "prog" keyboardists with sheer complexity, I´m afraid of.

^ Steve Hackett overrated? How come?
not only his work with Genesis is great (and it would have been even greater if Banks gave him some space and freedom), several of his solo album are amazing.
overrated my foot...

  • Steve Howe
  • Robert Fripp
  • Trevor Rabin
  • Frank Zappa
  • John Petrucci

I stuck with the more traditional prog guys.

I didn't include any of the jazz fusion guys like Al DiMeola, John Mclaughlin, Steve Morse, Jeff Beck.... All great players

Fred Frith (THE prog guitarist!)
Classical music isn't dead, it's more alive than it's ever been. It's just not on MTV.

My current favourites are

Belew
Fripp
Magnus Ryan (Snah)
Ian Thornley (not in a prog band strictly speaking but he is a fan of experimenting enough that I'd consider him a 'progressive' player)
Nick Reinhart (Tera Melos)
@ProgFollower on Twitter. Tweet me muzak.
