^ That may end up being the Tiananmen Square Tank of US healthcare
And besides; if universal access and preexisting coverage is part of the new bill, why would he say no one ever died due to lack of access to healthcare? It's a Freudian statement.

Raff and I had a good laugh this morning talking about the French election today... the great lesson of 2016. common sense, political convention, the polls themselves? pfff... Until the votes actually are counted... who really knows.

hardly David.. quotes like that are spoken by.. and more importantly TO.. those that think it is your fault if you get sick and the sentiment that 'why should I pay for your failings and choices'. Sad but true. Some pages back Brian hit on this notion perfectly which again Republicans have pandered to .. perfectly.. as much as racism still exists ..deeply in this country.. so does the frontier mentality that every man is an island.. a fortress.. and the government is to be feared. That is why only half our country is in arms about a bill passed that strips away healthcare and give tax breaks to the rich. The voter this guy was talking to to...isn't about interestedself preservation..that requires too much thought...it is about appealing to the base fear man that so many here still have... be it minorities, different religions.. or simply our own government. If anything this issue is the Tiananmen Square Tank for the Democratic Party... something that can unite and motivate its very different elements like nothing else could.

Sometimes it is your fault if you get sick. If you are huffing 3 packs of ciggies a day and you get lung cancer, probably your fault. If you are a hardcore serious alcoholic and you get cirrhosis of the liver, probably your fault. There are many instances where your illness relates to your lifestyle choices. Playing the blame game is of no use though. When it comes to sickness and health every man is an island. I think most peoples main fear is pain, that sh23t hurts.

To continue on a little sidenote, it's pretty certain at this point that Macron has won in France. Let us sigh in relief.

no doubt man and yeah the blame game isn't as easy as just pissing on smokers and drinkers. Those rates have been going down for decades. what isn't though.. how about the eaters! Rates of type 2 diabetes have increased markedly since 1960 in parallel with obesity and lack of exercise. As of 2015 there were approximately 392 million people diagnosed with the disease compared to around 30 million in 1985

In regards to France today, I am reminded of the immortal words of Pepe Le Pew, "Le Pen, I theenk her eenk has gone dry, no?"

I don't know why, but I just had a memory of the scene in Alien where John Hurt has digestive problems while eating dinner.

Yup. This could pave the way for a China-EU alliance, I reckon, you know, slightly nudging out US/UK. Not right away in the case of US but May is in a lot of trouble.

I don't think I've ever posted in the politics thread, so this is my first. I didn't vote. I couldn't bring myself to vote for Trump. I'm a Libertarian and an Objectivist and that is not Trump. I refuse to play the silly little games and just choose the lesser of two evils. I do have principles that I will perpetually adhere to. Voting for him just to keep the evil Clinton family out of the White House would have not brought me any joy, even though I feel the Clinton family are everything that is wrong with politics today and every cliche insult fits. I might be a man of reason but there's no rational argument to compel me to vote for someone I don't like just to take part in the process. I think this is the main problem that we have in this country. Everyone feels like they have to vote and vote for one of the two main parties. As long as everyone continues to do so, there will never be any change. We have so much possibility at our fingertips. How can it be that most people still treat this as a binary system? Vote for the alternate party if that's the person who represents your voice best. The more people that continue to do so will eventually start to make a difference. It might take time but it's entirely possible and I emphatically feel it's worth it. Sorry for the rant. I'm curious to hear what people have to say.

I'm pretty sure the Senate will actually pass Trumpcare. The more and more I think about it, they won't let this chance go. Even if they have to put together the most incoherent bill in history. They will.

Nixon... Sorry Trump just fired the FBI director Comey.
Sorry Richard Milhaus, you were an actually intelligent being. Sorry for the comparison.

^ Of course he fired Comey, that was expected (and probably best, we could do a lot better: too bad James Clapper is retired).
Yeah, Nixon was a real statesman compared to Rump.

Wow! We live in interesting times.
I remember noticing how dull the news was last week. Maybe Trump just got bored and decided to fire the FBI Director? More likely he's just a very dangerous fascist.
