Maybe his targets were attacked too viciously, but I'll take the Zappa approach.

I'm with Frank

Zappa is a better musician than Steven Wilson could ever dream to be. FZ was one of the great musical minds of the 20th century while the only stuff worthy of praise by SW is his work as a producer remixing classic albums.

Two great musicians/composers. A hard choice, but Frank Zappa takes my vote.

I vote for happy tears. How does that translate into the poll?

I'm going for anguished laughter, which definitely fits Frank Zappa. We're Only In It For The Money is still one of the darkest albums I've ever listened to, and that's counting all the industrial, funeral doom, death metal, and slowcore I've heard.

Heh I always thought of it as some kind of Disney on acid album, but then again I prefer the records that came afterwards Hot Rats, Waka Jawaka, The Grand Wazoo and One Size Fits All. If I want a slice of darkness these days I reach out for Geinoh Yamashirogumi's Osorezan. The starting horror scream always gives me a jolt. Funny how you can't prepare for some things.

Regarding the poll? I can't chose. I love both for completely different reasons. Early PT (which basically was solo Steven Wilson), IEM as well as his solo efforts. Anyway it wouldn't be fair to pit his four and a half solo albums up against Frankie's thousands, so I guess the draw still stands.

Love both - sometimes happy, sometimes sad I guess. Choose Zappa today...
He neither drank, smoked, nor rode a bicycle. Living frugally, saving his money, he died early, surrounded by greedy relatives. It was a great lesson to me -- John Barrymore

I know a very good bit of Steven Wilson, while I know very little (and don't have any) Frank Zappa... but there's a good reason for it. When I heard some Steven Wilson (well, until I actually bought some, being Grace for Drowning and Coma Divine), I was hooked, while what I have heard from Frank Zappa rather puts me off. And in general, even though I do like happy and uplifting music (at least some of it, such as Yes), "funny" music just won't do it for me... it's just about the same as saying ridiculous, and any "funny" thing included in music just won't make me laugh... and if something "funny" doesn't make you laugh then it's failed at it's real purpose and is useless. That said, some of the last pieces I got to hear from Zappa did sound interesting and showed promise of finding at least some songs that I could enjoy from him.

PLEASE someone tell me which version of We're Only In It For The Money sounds better to them..
The mono double-pack on Lumpy Money, or the later Ryko mix? I'd rather not shell out $30 on the MFSL cd copy, and there's SO MANY bootlegged mono pressings of We're Only In It on vinyl... It's tough. And I know it's a matter of opinion..

I recently bought Uncle Meat (the birth of RIO, I think), One Size Fits All, and Grand Wazoo all on records, and love every second. Uncle Meat especially to me is a masterpiece of masterpieces..

Obviously, to answer the OP's question, Zappa. But please let me know what version you find superior!!

I felt the same way, but Uncle Meat opened the Zappa gates for me much wider. Less comedy, more insane instrumentation and overdubs. I could clearly see that his sound inspired Cardiacs, Henry Cow, etc.

Like the post above states as well, there is just so much Zappa that is pure music and is absolutely fan-Frankie-tastic. On a similar side note, I have heard instrumentals where at certain parts (a hook, a guitar riff, a drum fill) makes me chuckle or laugh.  Laughter is not solely provoked via lyrics for me, has anyone else experienced this?

If you are turned off by the lyrics it might be a little more difficult to find songs that appeal to you; as many albums contain instrumental/more conventional songs surrounded by tracks that contain lyrics that some people find "ridiculous". It is too late for me now to come up with a list of some of those said songs, but I would suggest just picking up some albums and spinning the whole thing. You may find yourself enjoying it more than you thought. Or if you want almost no lyrics at all then just pick up the entire Shut Up n' Play Yer Guitar triptych, Jazz From Hell, Orchestral Favorites, The Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka and have your mind implode from the awesomeness.

My vote goes to Zappa, would be hard pressed to find a poll where I wouldn't vote for him, unless it is one of those who do like the least kinda deals.
