While Hamburger Hill (like We Were Soldiers) was about an actual battle I don't think it reached the level of intensity that the two poll choices did.

I will have to give a little more thought to this poll but I will vote sometime today.

Hamburger Hill? Pfft. For real intensity try Hamburger: The Motion Picture.

I love the smell of hamburger in the morning, so going with Apocalypse Now.

This was a very tough poll and I took some time to make a decision.
As far as movies go, I enjoyed both equally. Each movie was a different approach to the war and each represented a different branch of the military.
In the end, my vote goes to Apocalypse Now.

Toss up really. So I picked FMJ, I like how it is split into two parts. Could have been two movies really, one about the training and another about the war.

^  You know, Jose, the two part format was a big plus for the movie.
These two were so close that it was almost a flip of the coin but it was AN by a hair.

BTW, my daughter was a young teen at the time and she had a crush on Animal Mother.

Both are great, but really Apocalypse Now has to take this one. That bridge scene alone...

FMJ quite easily. Apocalypse Now is good as far as entertainment goes (plus a few cult scenes) but it lacks underlying commentary. Most people think the first half of FMJ is great but believe the second does not do it justice. I disagree. The second half is actually loaded with comments on the nature of war and violence, the duality of man, PTSD and so on. I understand it might be difficult for inattentive watchers to grasp these quickly mentioned subtle references but those are what differs between good and great movies imo. FMJ goes beyond mere entertainment and acts as a platform for socio-political and even psychological analysis (like any other Kubrick film). Kubrick crafts each and every line of dialogue with meticulous care to make a statement about as many issues or controversial ideas as he possibly can. Not to mention that FMJ is absolutely hilarious in a often dark sense.

Most folks probably don't pay attention to scenes that do not have direct involvement with the plot but this one right here I think demonstrates my point quite well:

"Larks' tongues. Wrens' livers. Chaffinch brains. Jaguars' earlobes. Wolf nipple chips. Get 'em while they're hot. They're lovely. Dromedary pretzels, only half a denar."
