Maybe because the sun, as a star, is the giver of life. All matter was not only forged in the belly
of stars but is constantly being created and replenished by the stars.

Thanks, I also was thinking of "sun" vs. "Son!"
I think Jon is more fixated on the glowing globe, I don't know how much of a strident Christian he is, if at all.

What's wrong with praising the Sun? It is the source of all those energies the human race is meant to use, i.e. renewable energy sources. I myself have written a song about the Sun, it goes like this:
Helios, Sol Invictus, Ré Shamash, Inti Viracocha Amaterasu, Sulus, Wi Malina, Anar, Are
Nothing grows without the Sun Green leaves turning light to life Wind and water kept in motion By the bright eye in the sky
Chorus: Engine of Life The Sun shines for all and for free Engine of Life Will make poverty history
Blue chips on the roofs of houses Windmills turning in the breeze River flowing down the valleys Will power our prosperity
No more need for splitting atoms No more radioactive waste No more wars for oil and coal And the climate stays OK
(Chorus)
Man and Nature reconciled Certainly it can be done The gates of future open wide With the power of the Sun

Suns, moons, floods, really everything seemingly majestic is sung about quite frequently in prog. I don't blame them though, because if you're gonna have namby-pamby lyrics they better be about something at least moderately cool.

There are quite a lot of prog bands that use sun-related themes as a source of inspiration, but none of them reach Jon Anderson's level of solar worship, of which Tales from Topographic Oceans is a showcase.

Never thought of him being interested in hard core Christianity. His lyrical musings have always had a large amount of Eastern Religious - Hindu and Buddhist - themes.
