Topic: Disillusion Part 2 - ELP Posted: February 16 2017 at 05:58 |
At some point, we become disillusioned by our heroes and stopped buying their albums automatically on release (especially when younger and vinyl was expensive). At which point did this happen with ELP (if, at all)?
(Sorry, I forgot to add the 'keep buying' and 'another album' categories, for some reason)

Works Vol. 1 was the only ELP album I bought shortly after its release.

Works Vol. 1 didn't disillusion me in the slightest. Although a tad too ambitious, it held the promise of greater things to come (or so I thought).

I like the Works albums, they're just uneven. Emerson, Lake & Powell more than made up for Love Beach.

Spot on! Love Beach was a contractual obligation; I applaud ELP for quitting when they did and ELPowell was a great 'comeback' album!

Real early. Sorry. When the 1st LP came out, I was miffed that Allegro Barbaro initially didn't cite its debt to Bartok who is my favorite composer. Subsequent releases did correct for that, fortunately. I liked the album despite that, though, and bought Tarkus & Pictures but never felt the need to continue with Trilogy. I have to say that, despite Lake and Palmer's greater technical proficiency, I always preferred The Nice because they were nuts. I saw both bands live. ELP came across as Serious Business, while The Nice seemed more dangerous.

I didn't go out and get Works Vol. 2 on release, although there are some excellent tracks on it. As a teenager, back in the day, buying records was relatively expensive and I (at least) tried to be careful about where I put my cash...the next time I reconnected was 'ELPowell'.
