I had a friend back in the late 70's and we had this discussion about Rush back then.  He kept pulling out their early albums and compared them to ELP. (Of course he played guitar and I played keyboards so you can imagine which side of the fence we were on)  But in the end I did respect Rush for creating prog music. Not completely in the box prog but prog none the less. I think of several songs  even their radio cuts, that could be classified as prog as the structure of the song was so different than your usual rock and roll or pop song.  They are not huge favs of mine but I do like them and I do think they are prog and they do belong here.

Rush are not prog.

They are unique.

So they defy classification!

So don't do it.

Or else.

OK?

Big smile

Kind of like you Reed boy.

I say prog just because they are different.  I know they have multi sides to them.  Kind of like I band I like.

Syzygy is the alignment of three celestial bodies in a straight line. It's also the name of a newer Prog group (three members) that rocks very hard. Not quite metal, but no droopy sausage.

It also describes a pair of linked or correlated things, and gets a massive amount of points if you get it on a triple word score (of course, you need a blank to do it).

As for pronunciation, I don't know how to get the IPA on this machine, but the second syllable is unstressed and close to a schwa. A good approximation would be Siz uh jee, but I think 'sausagey' sounds better.

I have one song of theirs on my comp, off of their recent release MOTH... its not bad! They're very ELPish (no, i didn't say elvish, you silly prog geeks).

Syzygy.... if you say "Sizzle G" quickly then that almost does it.

Alex Lifeson characterizes Rush simply as a power trio,no great definition mystery in it for him, apparantly.

Quote see what www.progarchives.com, calls them?

boy does this describe this forum!!!

Hey, I thought you were supposed to be outta here? Grand exit and all that, etc.

Quote Counterparts ... their worst ever.

...and this is your brain on crack.

Quote I know Peart's lyrics are pseudo-everthing garbage

What's an everthing? Look, Peart's a great lyricist. He's had his off days (like some songs on Hold Your Fire, Presto, and Roll The Bones) but you can't dismiss him as a sh!tty lyricist.

Quote I dont hate them, but when I think of progressive rock I certainly dont think of RUSH.

So? Many people don't. Rush was a prog at one time; now they're not. It's not because they're not making great music, it's because (like Yes, King Crimson, Kansas, etc.) they cemented their style twenty or more years ago and are just building on it. You can't tell me that Spock's Beard is truly a progressive band just because some long tunes came out of those guys. Much of the music we hear nowadays is a variation on one theme or idea or another. That doesn't mean we can't enjoy it.

Rush is Hard'n'Art to my opinion (or maybe Proto-Prog-Metal :-)), but there's no such version for reply...
