Hopefully he brings the country together against him and his insane policies.

Goodness Gracious Me I now have a fairly good idea of how much hope your President-Elect has of "bringing the country together" Edited by lazland - November 30 2016 at 10:13 |

This is how we thought Modi's term was panning out (making a big deal out of small initiatives which his acolytes would trumpet on social media) until he unleashed the demonetization bomb. So maybe a non performing Trump is better than one who decides to act on at least his major promises in a substantial way.

My fear is, for several reasons, Trump may not need to do that. IF he can keep nabbing a few small wins like this, may be all he needs.
His cult of personality is so strong I kinda think he'll get a pass on all the things he'll fail to do. Unfortunately.

"Carrier’s parent company, United Technologies, is a big defense contractor that earns about $5 billion in annual revenue from government contracts on fighter-jet engines and other types of weaponry. So Washington could make those contracts contingent on keeping other jobs in America. Trump also plans widespread tax cuts and regulatory relief that could be targeted at Carrier, though it’s not clear if he offered Carrier more than any other company would get. Meanwhile, Trump has backed off his campaign pledge of slapping 35% tariffs on air conditioners imported from Mexico to the United States, to punish any company that relocates production south of the border."

So here are two news stories that I think MAY shed light into what the hell Trump is trying to do.
Donald Trump strikes a deal with an Indiana company to keep 1000 jobs from being sent to Mexico. http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/nov/29/donald-trump-indiana-factory-jobs-carrier-mexico Trump has nominated Tom Price for Sect of Health and Human Services. Price has been a champion of privatizing medicare, going against Trump's claim that he wont touch medicare. http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-pol-trump-transition-20161129-story.html I am wondering if Trump will try to keep some jobs here, do some positive things, while then gutting social programs and selling out what remains of us to plutocrats. People will be so happy he's done some positive things, he will get a pass for everything else. This is especially bad for Dems, and Labor. Someone noted the first article mentions their union....and questioned how long it would remain under President Trump, how well their "$16 to $26 hour" wages will be in 4 years. The people are understandably happy jobs will stay, and it could even turn sentiment even more against labor "what good have unions done for me?" and Trump wins the long game: Keeps some jobs here, but at the loss of labor rights and wages down the road. I am serious, people are so desperate for a leader to do anything, they will vote him again without a second thought, because he kept jobs here while not noticing as he guts all else. I think this may honestly be his plan.

I have long said, "Let them. Go ahead, I'll even lend you a hand with the luggage" to Rick Perry's and others claims of seceeding from the country. I'd be quite happy to be rid of Texas and other red states, I think it'd be to the benefit of our country. They would be happy...they can be their own lands with their own rules and stuff they want away from us whiny liberal commieterrorists. Its a win win! Im largely serious |

The aristocracy likes the huddled masses. Maybe it is time to run a play, even if it is a Hail Mary.

There seems to be a tendency for the South to elect crazy people (not all the time, but one or two are enough to cause plenty of damage). I suspect that if the Confederacy survived the Civil War, it would have caused several more wars with its neighbors and would have made world politics complicated for the North (e.g., involvements in both world wars, among other things).
I believe Harry Turtledove has written a number of alternate history novels where the Confederacy still existed after the Civil War. The only one I read was "Guns of the South" which involved pro-apartheid time travelers from South Africa that brought machine guns with them to Civil War America. I think the other ones he wrote were unrelated to that novel.

^Its present times like these that make me wish that the South had won the Civil War! They could have had their own country called the United States of Apartheid and we could have had the Socialist States of America. And everything would have been just fine.

I wonder what the liberal reaction would have been had Clinton won, and the Democrats taken control of both houses, and the Red states called for secession from the Union
