Best Genesis Album? - Progressive Rock Music Forum

I really don't like dealing in bests, but the Lamb is my favorite for it's sheer weirdness.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

A Trick of the Tail

For the longest time though I thought it was SEBTP but "more fool me,""I know what I like" and especially "the battle of epping forest" bring it down for me. Still, it has their two best tracks after Supper's Ready in "firth of fifth" and "cinema show."

Not a huge Genesis fan,but my picks would be between ,FGTR,Trick,W&W and ATTW3.

For me, it's 'And then there were Three'....fell in love with 'Many too many', 'Undertow', 'Scenes from a nights dream'....probably the first Genesis album I got into as I was a late comer. Obviously first heard the commercial stuff like 'Invisible Touch' first but when I found ATTW3 I found some magic there.

Well, Deep in the Motherlode was, I think, the first song that made me prick up my ears and wonder "What is this music?" I still consider it one of their best tunes.

Not as epic as some of their others, but still the sound of mystery and wonder which always draws me to prog.

Many Too Many has one of Rutherford's best solos, and I would place it along a number of Hackett's. But then, IMO, there was a lot of earlier-band pastiche work in ATTW3. Collins tries to make his voice as sentimental as Gabriel on Snowman....

On a completely different note, Battle of Epping Forest is one of my favorites from Selling. In addition, I like Peter seeing baritone harmony on More Fool Me, and really, the acoustic break in style. Aisle is a GREAT revisiting of Moonlit Knight, just enough to leave you lingering with all the great music on the album. And the imagery is the sonic obscuring of the character, through "Tess" who exclaims "I don't belong here" and fades behind a chant of repeated price quotes and advertisements. The transformation is complete.

SEBTP kinda grew old on me sadly..

From favourite to least favourite

1: Trespass. It took a LONG time for me to come to terms with the production job on it, but the remasters have really cleaned this one up and there's a certain atmosphere to it which is unique.

2: Nursery Cryme. Another one which didn't click with me at first, but bit by bit it's grown on me over the years.

3: A Trick of the Tail. Best thing Phil ever did as frontman.

4: Selling England By the Pound. It was my first Genesis album and my introduction to their prog side, so it'll always be a bit special to me, but I have to admit that the Battle of Epping Forest is a bit much.

5: Wind and Wuthering. Second best thing Phil did as frontman.

6: Foxtrot. Some of the sections of Supper's Ready are a bit goofy, and Get 'em Out By Friday is kind of goofy.

7: The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. Some great moments that I wouldn't want to be without, but let's face it, as an overall concept it's utter bobbins.

8: Duke, if you just keep it to the "Duke Suite" tracks.

Pretty much anything else just isn't a keeper.
