Goddamn. If we're talking about '67 psychedelic / art pop rock albums with amateurish production quality, then this is one of the best. Not really a bad track on the album, at least in my opinion. Anyone else share any thoughts for this release?

Love the funky sleeve, and of course the tracks.

My all-time favorite Who album, though in some ways a pretty uncharacteristic one--starting with the lead-off track being by an outside songwriter.

There's a streak of fun that runs through this album they ditched on following albums. On their 5 year mission to boldy go to the heart of Pete Townshend's self absorbed anus!
Maybe it was the lack of commercial success this album had that encouraged them to not try stuff like this again. There's the odd light hearted moment on "Tommy" and one bit on "Quadrophenia". But The Who were never fun again as they are on here. |

Hey, let's be fair- The Who's "commercial" stuff was and still is some of the best rock in the business. Quadrophenia and Who's Next especially. If we're talking druggie-crazy, then yes they never exactly tried for it after this. That could be a good thing depending on who you are, but for me it's really here-nor-there.

Like this one. I noticed that Pete's guitar work took a bit of a jump here, particularly in "Our Love Was", "Relax", "Sunrise" and the "Jaguar" outtake.
Speaking of outtakes, if they added some more commercials and included "Hall Of The Mountain King", it could have made this album really nutty. |

The remaster from 1995 or so has all that stuff and makes the whole thing much better.

A proper concept album (not some vague Sgt Pepper thing.) Rocks well, has killer songs, loads of fun and Townshend is just getting going.
This and Hendrix' two for '67... and the Doors. |

Great album. The start of a really solid stretch of albums until "By Numbers".

The Who Sell Out and A Quick One have both deservedly been reassessed over the years After the career highs of Tommy, Leeds, Who's Next, and Quad, and the ensuing overplaying cuts from all on FM radio, fans went looking for anything different by the band. Both had kind of been overlooked for years and since the remasterings and expansions have taken on a new life.....though By Numbers and the expanded Odds and Sods continue to be my fave Who records. |

^ really... for as long as there have been album reviews... The Who Sell Out has been acclaimed as not only perhaps the Who's best album... but also perhaps the single best conceived and executed rock concept album.

One of my favorites from The Who ...along with Tommy and Who's Next..............then Quadrophenia which for me was always a bit overblown.
