Yes, well played, Angie!!!  I will be rooting for Pliskova, though.  But wouldn't mind a Kerber win in the least.

I love the picture of her that the WTA used for the number one ranking and the clever way they made use of it. Angie in full and typical action doing what she does best, running at full speed to get to impossible balls and hit them back, and in the background the 22 stars symbolizing the 22 WTA No. 1s so far (including her) forming the star sign "Angelique"

that is what she has that my darling Petra never had.. both have that flair and major power..not just human backboards like many on the women's tour... but what seperates the two Angie is one hell of a defender. Petra is a bit like me.. swing for the fences and either hit a winner or puts it in the first row of spectators.

 Love watching both play..

Ah, I have a soft corner for Petra too.  But Happy with What You Have to Be is the soundtrack of Petra fans.  Still, loved it when she crushed overhyped Genie Bouchard on Centre Court.  Crushed isn't the word, total annihilation.  LOL  But that's actually why I am pulling for Pliskova, the safer if more boring version of Petra.

I loved Angie's final match in the Aussie Open.  She did a Nadal on Serena with her passing shots.

actually I'll rooting for Angie in the final. But happy regardless of who wins..  a win-win for non US flag-waving tennis fans. We have needed new blood in that sport and love how both play. I like Pliskova's game but I'd still like to see Angie put her stamp on the #1 ranking not just fall into it.

for both Angelique Kerber and her idol Steffi Graf speed is respectively was one of their greatest weapons. just to give you an idea of how speedy they were respectively are here a fact about each:

Steffi's 800 and 1500 m times were absolutely top. she could run the 800 m in under 2 minutes, which at her time was absolutely world class, and her 1500 meter times were similar.

as to Angelique Kerber: she was seriously asked to compete for the 2016 Olympics over 800 and 1500 m by the DLV ("Deutscher Leichtathletikverband" meaning "German track and field federation"), which she declined because she wanted to concentrate on her tennis.

these two little facts should show you just how fast Steffi and Angelique were respectively are

hah... I was major fan of hers back in the day. In fact I ... oh nevermind.. too much information.

I didn't know that about her Jean. I knew speed, quickness, was key to her game but didn't know just much so she was.

Wow, didn't know this about Kerber.  I do know she is an amazing athlete.  Her squat shots are the best bar none. Serena does hit that shot very well as with mostly everything but I don't think even she can match Kerber on the squat shots.  Maybe the men can but we don't get to see it with all the heavy topspin in the men's game. If only Kerber had Graf's incredible forehand and backhand slice...still, I see now that Graf really did think Kerber would be the one to halt Serena's juggernaut.

When you look at the new WTA-rankings there is an interesting situation:

1) Angelique Kerber 8730 points
2) Serena Williams 7050 points
3) Garbiņe Muguruza 5830 points
4) Agnieszka Radwanska 5815 points.

As you can see the gap between Kerber and Williams is now 1680 points, but the gap between Williams and Muguruza or Radwanska is only 1220 respectively 1235 points.

This is a really unusual situation; at the beginning of this year Serena Williams was totally out of reach, and now the way down for her is shorter than the way up.

I'd like to add something to what Friede said. after her Australian Open win Kerber was number 2 in the world but still more than 3500 points behind Serena Williams. and now she is 1680 points ahead of her, which means there was a landslide shift of more than 5000 points. this is absolutely incredible, especially since Serena had a year anyone else but her would have been proud of: reaching three Grand Slam finals and winning one of them

well note Serena won damn near everything last year up until the Open... when she dropped off the radar for 4 months including the year end championship.

Angie had a sh*tty year last year. Thus the huge point difference at the beginning and thpugh Serena had a great year by 'other' standards.. it was still quite a drop off from the year before.

Serena has like no points to defend for the rest of the year...  Angie did play well in the fall of last year.  Serena still could retake the #1. Not that I hope she does..

Serena is head and shoulders the least likeable #1 I've seen... ever.. in tennis. Even Lendl was more likeabe than her LOL The day she retires .. as a huge fan of women's tennis.. I'll rejoice.   If only the gods had combined Serena's talent and Venus's demeanor and likeability.
