Duke is my favorite.
Second would either be Selling England by the Pound or A Trick of the Tale (so one of those two would be third, too).
Fourth would be Abacab.
Fifth the 1983 self-titled.
(I suppose I should post this in the unpopular opinions thread, but that's most of my opinions, so I'd be stuck only posting in that thread.)

Best? In my opinion, I'd say Trick of the Tail or Self-titled. No, I'm not trolling, I've just never been able to get into the Gabriel albums. |
I like the Peter Gabriel albums a lot, but overall, I think that both Genesis and Peter Gabriel were better when Peter Gabriel left the band. Those first four self-titled Gabriel solo LPs ("Car", "Scratch", "Melt" and "Security"), plus So and Passion, are some of the best stuff ever .

I consider "Seeling England by the Pound" (follow by "Nursery Crime") not only the best album of GENESIS as well as one of more representative album of symphonic-prog style and certainly from all progressive rock history !!!

For song writing and production I think The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway wins hands down. Peter Gabriel was in top form on this one.
For Melody, magic and sheer toe tapping its A Trick of The Tail. Phil Collins really shows why his voice is bloody #1 !

Maybe it's just me but I never really got into The Lamb. I didn't much care for Gabriel's Genesis before that album and it just seemed like Lamb was a high point for his artsy over-the-top indulgence. I prefer Selling England by the Pound over it personally.

| Musically, The Lamb holds up remarkably well some 41 years after its release. The drawback with it is the album was, rightly, seen as a Gabriel project, rather than previous albums which were group orientated, and it signalled the death knell not only of the band, but also such great big slabs of concept in rock albums for quite a few years.

well to narrow it down so here`s: 1. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. 2. Foxtrot. 3. Selling England By The Pound. 4. Trespass. 5. Live. 6. Nursery Cryme. 7. Wind And Wuthering 8. Seconds Out. 9. A Trick Of The Tail.
after Steve Hackett departed Genesis went way too poppy for me!

I wonder if the first album would have had more takers if Jonathan King had not trampled all over it? Weak in the drum department, for sure, but listening to Archives 67-75, CD4, their songs were more listenable than they became in the 80s...

I agree it stands up musically very well after all this time. I share Tony Bank's view opinion of the story though. To me it sounds like the poetic ramblings of a sixth former trying to be 'deep' However, I like the atmosphere of the music and the slightly more grittier edge to the music. When I first bought this album as a teenager I listened to it every day for weeks on the headphones getting totally lost in the music. I couldn't believe that a rock band could have such musical imagination. I think this was the first Gabriel Genesis album I heard.

The Lamb is definitely PG's baby. An absolute reign of leadership and creativity on his part...maybe a little too much PG cause the album really did create a division (death knell) in the band. The Lamb is still in my top 3 Genesis albums. Once again though, great music is absolutely timeless.

I've always imagined replacing The Battle Of Epping Forest with Suppers Ready would make SEBTP the ultimate prog album by anyone ever... But, it's difficult to argue anyway against an album that has The Cinema Show and Firth Of Fifth, and Dancing With The Moonlit Knight. But Foxtrot and Trick Of The Tail do push it close. The Lamb...I still don't know....I think it's possible that one day I will think it's the best...but it's still not yet...

In my humble opinion Foxtrot is by far their best album. Not one bad moment on that album. Amazing. SEBTP is overrated, in my humble opinion. Some of it is as good as it gets (Dancing with The Moonlit Knight, Firth Of Fifth) but too much is uninspired or just not quite finished (Epping Forest, After The Ordeal, Cinema Show) and I just don’t dig “I know What I Like In Your Wardrobe” or “More Fool Me.” The latter sucks and the former is just “ok." The Lamb is incredible. So is Nursery Cryme. ATOTT is great, Wind and Wuthering is just about as good. Sometimes I like it even more. Trespass is another very good album and the live stuff is great as well. Not a fan of anything else. Especially Abacab. One of the worst albums I have ever heard. Bathwater.

Yes sometimes we are very different but I must say my tastes most of the time align with the ratings here on PA. I just don’t love Selling England By The Pound as much as everyone else. Cheers!
