Can anyone say anything good about Hillary Clinton without mentioning Donald Trump in the same sentence?

Yes, I. She's prepared, she's intelligent, she has experience.
She has 23197 flaws but not much more than most politicians.

Sorry to intrude. Let me just answer: I actually think Trump himself is not a big racist. I think he has few actual beliefs of any type, and he has no time for the (admittedly wrong, awful) thinking that leads to racism.
However, by failing to disavow the racists that follow him, the KKK, other white-power organizations and militias, he has given power to said groups and has made such thinking move out of the fringe. The problem is not that Trump himself is racist, but that his candidacy has given freedom to racists to be so openly.

So what's PA's take on Hilary's running mate? I hear a lot of persuasive assurance from mainstream press but at the same time I wonder if Tim Kaine wouldn't sort of help prove Trump's point that the Democratic party is pro-establishment. I mean, it would appear that this election is more about symbolism than substance.

He backs them by sharing most of the same values, and by not condemning former KKK leader David Duke. He recently said that he didn't even know who the man was! And he said in the past that he condemned his views and affiliations. Lies, lies, lies. | Even though that's already a contradiction, could you perhaps provide some white supremacist quotes from Trump to back up your first claim?
|
Trump said "[Mexico] are sending people that have lots of problems, and they are bringing those problems to us. They are bringing drugs, and bringing crime, and their rapists, and some, I assume, are good people." That's enough White Power rhetoric for me. And for the record, Latinos are considered "brown".

Are you implying Trump would welcome white criminals and rapists, and is thus discriminatory towards what you categorize as brown ones?

It does seem that he's not the best symbolic choice, as the remaining ~30% of unconvinced Bern supporters evidence; substance-wise, on the other hand, he's fairly progressive and has a long career of doing good things from being a civil rights lawyer to being governor to the senate. And while Hillary could've picked a better ground game choice by somehow digging up a Pennsylvanian for the slot, Kaine at least ensures Virginia (safe for her as it practically was already) is going to her, the end.
The real issue are these rumblings I've heard of him having taken some anti-labour positions in the past, MASSIVE no-no even before this particular campaign.
Ultimately, we'll have to see...

Hillary is about as inviting as a flower pot. But at least she's not a crack pot. | Nope. Absolutely not. But she is, like her husband, utterly avaricious in her pursuit of power, utterly in hock to large corporations, who, in turn, are very largely responsible for the rise of people such as Trump. What comes around, goes around, and the past twenty five years, or so, of political thinking is beginning to bite the establishment well and truly on the arse. As usual, it is ordinary people who are suffering as a result.

She is pro-choice. She is pro-gay rights. She is pro-woman's rights. She is a mom who understands that "it takes a village to raise a child". She is pro-science education. She is mostly pro-environment when it doesn't conflict with being pro-Wall Street. She is pro-Obama care. She is anti-capital punishment. She is pro separation of church and state. She understands that there is a difference between extreme militant Muslims (a small percentage) and the rest of the Muslim population and that it isn't really wise to piss off all of the Muslims by lumping them altogether. She isn't openly racist. She is open to recognizing that illegal immigrants are real live people, most of whom are trying to make a better lives for themselves and their families and are contributing positively to US society and that although they have broken the law by being here illegally, that is the worst thing that they did and if you truly understood what life was like in their home countries...you can't really blame them.

Let's not bandy words. Trump and the Repubs sanction the killing of brown and black minorities by a group of whites, who are called the police. So the answer to your question is yes.

No agreement or kudos to you on this one Steve. Hillary is simply the lesser of evils by a wide margin. I personally don't like her but as many on this thread have said, if she's voted in, liberal rights, as well as a liberal Supreme Court justice appointee, hangs in the balance. I don't think this the time for the US to go bungy jumping without the cord, as the UK did with Brixet. Four more years of the same sounds better to me than a Trump run political apocalypse.

| And I suspect that your judgement will prove to be correct. I suspect that she will win, for many of the reasons that you and others have put over. But, by God, a choice of a nutter and "the lesser of two evils" strikes me as the absolute epitome of just how wrong the political system is, both in USA and over this side of the pond. That is not a "choice". It is akin to blackmail, and it will only make the situation worst in the long run, believe me. In any sane country, and any sane political system, neither of these two would have come within a light year of becoming the most powerful political leader on earth. Therein lies the problem. One is a demagogue, lier, rich, nut job. The other is a liberal demagogue (not a pleasant creature at the best of times), a lier, and utterly wedded to power for its own sake, principles be f**ked. That is where I come from in this. I do not like the "lesser of two evils" as a choice. That is not a choice. That is the mark of a failing political system.

I understand your point Steve, but I believe that having no choice at all is the mark of a failed system. What we have is what we have, it's our fault. But we can't change the political future if there isn't one left to change.
