Topic: Best Genesis Album? Posted: June 23 2016 at 18:28 |
What do you think the best Genesis album is? I personally think its Selling England By the Pound, but I see some people think Foxtrot is the better album. The Lamb Lies down on Broadway is also a very large contender. I don't think anything Phil Collins did with the band could top those 3 records, either.

I can't pick between Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme. Both albums have a very textured acoustic feel, which I'm a fan of. Oh... and the MELLOTRON! Lots of it.

My personal fave is probably "Wind and Wuthering". But I really like all the Pete stuff too.

I want to say The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway because it feels like a full experience from the first song to the last one, not only through the overarching storyline but with the reprising sections that make the songs feel more like they're connected to one another (ex. the Fly on a Windshield/Broadway Melody riff that shows up throughout the album, or the Lamia and Lamb reprises on Light Dies Down).
I can say I'm a fan of albums that present recurring musical themes... Genesis did this a lot in their best albums: Selling England by the Pound begins and ends with the same melody (Moonlit Knight intro and Aisle of Plenty), A Trick of the Tail (another favorite of mine) has Los Endos taking cues from Dance on a Volcano and Squonk, and Wind and Wuthering has a main theme going through Eleventh Earl of Mar, One for the Vine (not sure if I'm right on this one - haven't listened to the track for a while) and Unquiet Slumbers/Quiet Earth/Afterglow.

Trespass. Only Genesis album I can think of without any weak tracks and it was back when Pete's lyrics were down to Earth and made some sense. While Genesis reached higher peaks on other albums, Trespass is the only one where they were consistent.

For me, "Selling England by the Pound". Perhaps "Live at the Rainbow" if it had been officially released complete. It's about the same as "Genesis Live", I got it in the Live Boxed set, but the whole concert is only inlcuded on DVD audio, on CD it only has the songs that were left out of "Live", but as a whole it is great, and I like most of the versions better than the studio ones.

I can talk about Genesis's albums from now till tomorrow (Bla Bla Bla ...!). I can't get anything with this way and its may bore you (I'm sure this bore you!). I decide to choose from deep of my soul and heart : " The Lamb Lies ... " is my fave Genesis's album. This impress me from 30 years earlier till now. I really love this album.

That works for me...though on any given day I might reverse the order.
