The two bands I don't get at all are Dream Theater and Opeth. I just never found a way into them. The rest, like you said, I like many songs by them, but not really albums. Marillion and IQ would be my two favorites on this list; they've written some great tracks.

Interesting poll....My opinion varies about these bands a lot. I am not into Renessaince and Anglagard - never understood what is so special about them. Besides that I have similar feeling about Marillion (I prefer both solo Fish and Hogarth, and I love Arena). Dream Theater with Moore and until Six Degrees are mostly great, after that sharp decrease to almost pointless band for me. As for IQ, I think they have grown with time contrary to most of prog bands, releasing particulary great albums in a new millenium, peaking with Road of Bones. Focus is great during period Moving Waves - H.C., Harmonium albums are excellent (especially 2. and 3.). Riverside is constantly fine, but not really exceptional for me, Opeth, especially post-Still Life is excellent until these days. Porcupine Tree are favorites here - constantly great.

Marillion (Fish-era primarily), followed by Änglagård and Harmonium.

Still can't understand why Opeth are considered prog. I saw them live in 2010 and they were appalling.

Very hard poll for me. I like some of them equal but I like to vote :
1 - Focus = Marillion (Fish era) = Renaissance 2 - Porcupine tree = Harmonium = Riverside = Anglagard
I pick FOCUS today.

Had to vote for Focus. One of the few prog bands (like KC) who can write really good material (Moving Waves, Hamburger Concerto) and improvise (Focus 3) with some possibly less essential albums (Mother Focus, Ship Of Memories, Con Proby). P Tree have a vast variety of music that is not easily dismissed due that variety. Riverside are very intriguing to me.
Marillion are game of two haves . I go for the Fish era.
I've albums from Dream Theatre, IQ, Opeth and others, some bootlegs but for various non-reasons have yet to get me going...

Renaissance. If you never listened to a full album, please check out 'live at Carnegie Hall'! And also Marillion (Fish-era).

| Yeah, that's the album I started with Renaissance, and it's wonderful. I now have that one, plus Ashes are Burning, Turn of the Cards, and Scheherazade. I love them all, but still my favourite songs on my favourite versions come from Carnegie Hall. I'm still wonderig about getting the next 3 albums... for what I have heard, they don't seem to reach the same brilliance they achieved with the ones I already have.

I see Novella as an extension of the Scheherazade approach but with both more focus and emotional resonance. The most emotional part of Sch is a pop-folk ballad, enough said. Song for all Seasons kept the orchestra but added more rhythm, more infectiousness, not a bad thing at all. While I do like both Novella and SFAS more than Sch, I think the gap between these three albums isn't much and likewise with Ashes are burning (though that's a different style). Turn of the Cards is the weakest of the bunch. I reckon that is because it was a transition album where they were moving to the archetypal Renaissance sound but would execute it better on subsequent albums. Cards is kinda patchy and even the highs, barring Things I don't understand, don't approach the highs of the other albums.

Rogerthat and I have had many enjoyable discussions on this subject. You can also check out our reviews on ASFAS (as well as that of my progfolk peer clemofnazareth). To me ASFAS is a sparkling album that has the band showing more life than in any other studio release, but there are a few poppier numbers but also a couple of superb epics that work on multiple levels. Novella is more low energy and serious but very beautiful. As a fan already, you will hopefully be inclined to give these a chance and not write them off after one or two listens. I say go for it and let us know what you think, perhaps in the Renaissance zone. Unlike rogerthat, I think "Turn of the Cards" is one of their 3 best. (Turn, Ashes and ASFAS). I really don't like Azure D'Or. They dropped the orchestra and doubled and tripled up on synthesizers and it just sounds plastic.

Dream Theater (the only modern prog band I really like) and Renaissance. Opeth and IQ are ok in a good way... Porcupine Tree lacks skill, soul and passion. Easily my least favorite band here. Riverside and Marillion are "meh".

Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.

Ken, I have posted a youtube vid of a performance of Sounds of the Sea from their London concert this year in the Renaissance Zone. You might want to check it out.

| OK. Mostly what I have heard from post Scheherazade albums are a live performance on video that came with the remastered edition of Scheherazade itself, but strangely enough it was from the Azure D'Or era; it had Jeckyll and Hyde and other songs from the same album, and those did nothing for me. Also, I have heard on YouTube Northern Lights, which I have read is perhaps the most succesful song they have done, and it also didn't interest me. I guess I must have heard at least once some other of the longer songs from Novella or A Song for all Seasons in order for me to come to the conclusion that I wasn't interested to check out those three albums as a priority, but in the end sooner or later I would have to come to it. Perhaps I'll try to do it sooner then, to complete my collection of the albums from the classic line-up of the band, at least (though I still have very low hopes for Azure D'Or at least). On the other hand, from the 3 studio albums that I do have, Turn of the Cards is definitley my favourite one.

I think Novella is an album that needs investment of time. I didn't really like it much the first few times I listened to it but it grew on me and I would say it is the most well put together album of the mk ii line up. Whereas On the frontier/I think of you are somewhat dispensable, every track on Novella is strong and the music also flows well (where Sch is a bit all over the place starting with jazz going to folk pop etc). As for Song for all seasons just check out Day of the dreamer and the title track. If those don't interest you, the album is not for you. I like the rocking momentum, upbeat mood of Dreamer; a nice change from their usual melancholy.

OK, I'll keep that in mind. Actually, I'm used to having albums need several listens to grow on me... it kind of comes with the package of getting into prog.
