Ordinary people are no better than politicians. Most of them will throw you under the bus if it serves their purpose, or often just out of cowardice (though of course there are exceptions to the rule). Though I am not a fan of politicians as a whole, I am sick and tired of seeing them depicted as a bunch of monsters who are responsible for all of the world's evils. People are not angels, and the sooner they realize they are often responsible (at least in part) for what happens to them.

^Exactly. People seem to forget that before being politicians, politicians are people, who have access to certain powers that, given to most "common people" would probably also lead to these ones abusing it a little. Picturing non-politicians as angels with true hearts and generous nature is even more ridiculous when one thinks that it is these people who vote for the "evil" ones.

Most people don't have the political or economic power to hurt people in the way that politicians or CEOs do.

^But if said people acquired that power, many of them would be just as bad.

Probably, but I don't think it's the people themselves necessarily, but rather the fact that the system incentivizes the bad behavior. |

I agree with that, which is why it is so important not to reward bad behavior by allowing the worse possible person to get elected.

On a related note... This happened to a fellow Italian, an economics professor: http://https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/rampage/wp/2016/05/07/ivy-league-economist-interrogated-for-doing-math-on-american-airlines-flight/?tid=sm_fb. Good thing I have fair skin and light brown hair. If something like that had happened to me, I'd have been out of here for good.

GOP Civil War!!! That is what the press are starting to call it... gotta love it. No wonder those nut cases are so nutty. I think their leadership are sh*t house crazier than even the voters are. They DO realize that Trump is right.. it isn't Trump that is out of touch (relatively speaking of course) it is those obstructionists, do-nothings and demagogues on Capital Hill. The establishment.
The party selected him. The voters did. This can, hopefully will, get very interesting. oh this could get bloody.. and enjoying the beer and popcorn as we watch this unfold. Edited by micky - May 07 2016 at 15:00 |

Half of my relatives on the Venetian side might get waylaid in like manner. I was always suspicious of my dad being able to shave twice in a day.

Yes, because English and Italian accents are so close-sounding. You should stop by sometime at one of our family reunions, half-Irish and half-Italian (or as my mother would say "Half-Irish and half-stupid"), and listen to the Gaelic talkers trying to make sense of the Venetians. It's like the tower of Babel.

I think there's some selection bias which makes politicians more likely to behave like monsters that has nothing to do with power differential. |

Positions of power always seem to attract those least suited for them. |
