Congratulations! Although you list a lot of bands that I don't like (I learned to hate Chicago in high school, and I will continue to do so 'til the day I die), and you're missing a ton of bands that I do like, I voted "good" for the simple reason that you HAVE a record collection. I've got nothing against CDs (I might have more than 500) but there is something inherently wonderful about vinyl. And I'm not just talking about sound quality.
How long have you been working on your collection? I bought my first vinyl album in 1979, Steve Martin's Wild And Crazy Guy. I still have it. My first music album was Styx's Pieces Of Eight. They are still a guilty pleasure for me. Styx led to ELO led to Supertramp led to Kansas etc. etc. until now I'm into Faust, Frank Zappa, Soft Machine... (and that's just some of the proggie stuff). I've been very surprised lately to see some of the eBay prices for records that I bought new in the '80s. And I've picked up a few used records at library fund-raising sales (and such) for $1 that sell for around $60 or more. |

Umm... I started collecting records... maybe a year ago? I'm 17, so I
never had the opportunity to collect records in the 70s and 80s
![]() Its funny you made that comment about the Chicago records, because I don't like them all that much myself... I didn't buy either of them, I got them from a friend, as did I get a lot of the albums I own. Most of the more solid collections I have, the Rush, Yes, Genesis, PF, Tull, and ELP, took a little more money and a little more searching. I should also mention how much I love finding records. I love the hunt as much as I love the game, really. Someday I'll be in an old record store, searching through a box of records that they recently got in, and in a sea of the typical barbara streissand, neil diamond, rod stewart... suddenly that one album that I've been searching for for so long will appear, and what a rush! Its great, and its really addictive. |

I bleed coffee. When I don't drink coffee, my veins run dry, and I shrivel up and die.

I've bought most of mine new, and I run on $15 a week, so I can get one a week. I'm asking for like 20 for X-mas, though, and I already have most essential prog stuff (In the Court of the CK evades me still! --but it's at the top of my X-mas list). Even though I've been collecting for only a half-year, I still have quite a bit (about 30-35, maybe 40) of CDs. No LPs. No cassettes. They don't count, because there's no way I could listen to them but from the living room, and my parents usually don't wanna hear it. I ought to take up eBay. |

That's happened to me a few times. Doesn't happen often but I don't have as much time or money to devote to my hobby as I'd like. My most memorable find was probably at a charity record sale in Buffalo, NY. Their local NPR station used to have a yearly sale called Vinyl Madness. Records were $1 each. I found Brian Eno's no wave compilation No New York in mint- condition. I also found an original copy of Zappa's Uncle Meat there one year, with the book.
From time to time I actually dream about record hunting. It's never a good dream, though. I'm usually desparately searching through loads of crap and coming up with nothing. |

You could try If you live near Pittsburgh, PA you should go to Jerry's Records (www.jerrysrecords.com). They have a TON of the more common used records at reasonable prices. They have rarer stuff too, but it's really a good place to sample some old records that you might not have heard.
I'd also suggest, if you want to get serious about record collecting, subscribing to Goldmine and/or Discoveries magazines (not sure the latter is still around, though). |

Your collection is good, but it needs a bit of "variation"

I'm not going to repeat what others said. Errm, let me add that you need some more Canterbury / fusion. Well, BebieM already said somethig about it. You need some Hatfield and The North, National Health, Bruford... Edited by Moogtron III |

if you want an advice...it is better to use your money for studio albums than live albums and compilations.
