They sampled pretty much everything on those Dream Mixes albums, but honestly, most of them just turned me off because they made me want to listen to the actual albums sans the trance beats. I think DMV was the best of the bunch.

John Lord and Jordan Rudess. Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman are up there but for me they stand lower on the ladder than the two first mentioned. Jens Johansson and Don Airey are there as is Clive Nolan. Vangelis and Jean Michel Jarre deserve mention as well.
Those are the immediate stand out keyboard musicians for me. |

You really aren't. I will just say this: check the track listing on Dream Mixes V and check for some/any on YT. Don't worry about the rest. And the very first one is abysmal! |

Jens' fusion endeavors are outstanding, especially Heavy Machinery with his brother Anders and the one & only Allan Holdsworth. Jens' solo album Fjaderlosa Tvafotingar is also worth seeking out. |

I agree with this. There is no such thing as the best. The best are all those who have something unique to give.

Well. This is the beauty and diversity of Prog in general. So many great keyboardist with in Prog....and so different.
It's so incredibly hard to just pick one artist as the best. I say it depends on what you are in the mood for. Anything from Wakeman to Reznor to Nolan....whatever it may be for you it's all amazing!! Keep progging on. ![]() |

Billy Ritchie WAS the best Hammond player on a stage, most dynamic by a mile.

My top 7:
1. Dave Stewart - because everything Egg. Key track: "Symphony No. 2" by Egg and "Wring Out The Ground (Loosely Now). 2. Keith Emerson - I don't think I need to say why. Key track: "The Old Castle/Blues Variation" from Pictures at an Exhibition. 3. Mike Ratledge - especially in his early days, his break-neck tempo speedy salvos are amazing! 4. Vincent Crane - another underrated organ player, look at his work in Crazy World or Atomic Rooster. Key track: hmmm.... "Breakthrough" by Atomic Rooster or "Prelude/Nightmare" by Crazy World of Arthur Brown. 5. Tony Banks - I fell in love with his playing after I heard "The Knife". Key track: so many, but I'd say "The Knife" by Genesis. 6. Pete Bardens - fantastic jazz-influenced playing, fantastic taste and phrasing. Key track: "Lady Fantasy" by Camel. 7. Kerry Minear - gave Gentle Giant a very proggy feel. Key track: "Proclamation" by Gentle Giant. |

Only Vincent Crane and Keith Emerson on that last list to be taken seriously. The rest are good pros, and that's it. Missing from the list? Rick Wakeman, Billy Ritchie, glaring examples. Fame lists galore, not pure quality.

I'd say that for me (at the momnet) the best keyboardists are Jozef Skrzek and Tomas Bodin. Not just because they're technically good, but also because I like their compositions and contributions to the sound of their bands.

Billy Ritchie should be mentioned first as he WAS the first to bring keyboards to the front of the stage (and without the support of guitars). But Keith Emerson not only brought keyboards to the public mind, he introduced the Rock world to synthesisers big time. RIP Keith.

Mariàn Varga has got to be one of the most overlooked players out there. I was looking for some old footage but I could only find new stuff. An old man by now but he can still play like the wind:
