Nice couple of days, Andrew! I really need to check out some Brahms 
This weekend: Tangerine Dream - Ricochet (Incredible album  ) King Crimson - Islands (I had to play each side on a different day, it's so difficult to stay awake during the whole album (just like Trespass)  ) Tangerine Dream - Hyperborea (This dirty old LP finally plays like a new one  ) Klaus Schulze and Pete Namlook - Dark Side of the Moog IV (Worst album of the set  )

Plues Pills – Sam, I’ve come to a disappointing conclusion – I find these kind of retro-rock bands completely unengaging. Pristine, etc...I know the playing is great, the song-writing cool and the female singer smoking hot, but I don’t find the music interesting whatsoever, and I find they all sound the same. I just listen blankly feeling nothing at all, even though I know all those qualities I mentioned above are praises. I think I prefer the ones with more obviously `proggy’ elements like Jess and the Ancient Ones, Blood Ceremony, etc.

It depends on my mood, some days I find their music samey but on others I really enjoy it. I think the production of that CD is cold and confusing though, it's not easy to just sit down and listen. I also don't expect Prog, but Pristine's latest has some proggy tracks, and a better production.
Yesterday: Kraftwerk - Kraftwerk 2 (Not as good as the first but it's nice.) Scorpions - Lonesome Crow (I discovered this was the first album released by the Krautrock label Brain and it sure is a great start ) Yellow Magic Orchestra - s/t Yellow Magic Orchestra - Solid State Survivor Ashra - Blackouts Esfera - All The Colours of Madness (I remember these guys created a thread here a couple of years ago, when they only had one track. They finally released this really good debut ) Le Orme - Uomo di Pezza Hooffoot - s/t (Got to love the main tune of side 2 in 26/8... nothing says Prog like crazy time signatures  )

I certainly wasn't expecting prog, although I would have probably dug the Blues Pills one more if they had keyboards, or even a touch of Hammond (which I really expected it would have had). But I've now worked out that I love the IDEA (cool retro rock sounds, lovely gutsy singer) of those sort of bands over actually really falling for their music. I've had that niggling suspicion for quite a while, and this album now confirmed that I probably better not take a chance on these sort of albums again. I've nearly bought a few on LP here and there, but something's always held me back, kind of in the back of my mind saying `Dude, you probably won't listen to that very much'...I just need to ignore the awesome cover art and smoking hot singers!

^ What did I say about the production?  It does have Hammond on a few tracks (and backing vocals) but it's so difficult to hear. Almost every track from Pristine has loud and clear Hammond though That sure is hard to ignore

Had a ball driving to work today listening to - GASP - the Rio album from Duran Duran....."cherry ice cream smile/I suppose it's very nice." Borrowed the CD from the library on a whim and enjoyed the first four tracks.....that was enough Duran Duran to last the next 10 years. Fun while it lasted, though.

Received a beautiful punch in the face last week. My beloved Fields of The Nephilim are releasing a new studio album very very shortly. It's been 11 years since their last one! This is the best news sonically, that I will receive this year.
Obviously been having a Nephilim day...week for that matter with a few others.
Fields of the Nephilim-- earth inferno, Dawnrazor, ceremonies, ST, Zoon, mourning sun and live on BBC radio (1988)
Headspace-- all that you fear is gone ( this is terrific heavy Prog guys!)
Redemption-- the art of loss ( definitely getting better with every listen. )
