The Fates work in strange ways and much of life is a knife edge. After nine pages of this discussion, there is little I can say about this most sad news that has not already been said. A shock and a tragedy on so many levels. Life is but a breath and we each have our own path to walk. Keith Emerson walked his own with swagger and skill. May we all learn from his example. May his music live on for the enjoyment of generations. May he rest in piece. Or jam on like the true nutrocker he was.

I am well aware that he lived for playing and performing. He could've still composed the odd Concerto and conducted - unless - he had more issues than his hands.......

Absolutely gutted at this loss; haven't read through the last 9 pages, but I imagine all will say what I can't...
On a positive slant, a good friend of mine, Tom Szakaly heads a damned fine ELP tribute band & is/was also a good friend of KE - Tom's band (Noddys Puncture) was playing a gig in 2005 & unknown to them, KE was in the audience, one of whom caught this moment on film: https://www.facebook.com/noddyspuncture/videos/10153410972640423/ They then proceeded to play the rest of the set with their new member. An absolute tragic loss - one of the most profoundly innovative and brilliant progressive musicians - we will never see the like again! I was too young to catch ELP in the 70s, but fond memories of seeing them for the first time at the Albert Hall and then the last ever performance at High Voltage - it was an absolute joy. I recall the spine tingling moment when the crowd roared as Keith set up the mighty Moog solo at the end of 'Lucky Man'...

I was at the Albert Hall and High Voltage shows too. It was great to see my heroes in the flesh but there was a lingering sense of regret that I was too young to have seen them at their peak in the early 70s. The reminiscences of people like Danny Baker who were lucky enough to have seen ELP then confirm that the experience was as explosive and immersive as it sounds on the studio albums and live recordings from that era. I had to laugh at one guy commenting on the BBC tribute page who saw them in 1971, and said the fuzz bass line on The Barbarian was so loud it made his flared trousers flap! |

Just one negative note here: In reporting the death of Emerson, a TV entertainment reporter here in L.A. stated that one of ELP's hits was "Lucky Girl." I mean, this guy's probably being paid at least in the high six figures annually to get it right, and he comes up with this blooper. Perhaps just another reminder of the lack of respect prog generally gets in the media.

I've been an ELP fan since a school friend taped "Welcome Back My Friends..." for me soon after it was released. Starting with the ridiculous speed of "Hoedown", through the brilliant Moog of "Aquatarkus" to the wonderful, mind-bogglingly brilliant piano playing on "Take a Pebble" to the ending of "Karn Evil 9", I've always loved this and their other albums. I was lucky enough to see their last show at High Voltage.
RIP Keith - the best prog keyboard player of all time (with apologies to Mr Wakeman and others).

I read the very sad news in Facebook on Friday's afternoon. It is a great loss for Prog Music. Keith Emerson was a great keyboard player and musician. I always had a lot of respect for ELP. The first itme that I listened to them was to their "Tarkus" album, maybe in 1973. Very elaborated music created by a very good trio of musicians. Maybe their best album is "Welcome Back My Friends to the Show that Never Ends". Great playing from them. Keith Emerson, RIP.

I don't think Wakeman would accept an apology is necessary - In my humble opinion, Keith Emerson was the greatest rock keyboard player of his or any other generation; composer, songwriter, performer, showman - he excelled at all of these. The word Icon is one bandied about too much, but very few genuinely deserve the title, Bowie was one, Emerson another. A truly tragic loss, not only to progressive rock, but to music in general. |

I was never ELPs biggest fan, but if it weren't for Emerson I wouldn't have Il Balletto Di Bronzo, Elephant9, Le Orme and the list literally goes on and on. One of the most original keyboard players in all of music.
