Very sad to hear that such a legend has passed on this way. Emerson will always remain in my music collection as an outstanding keyboardist. He single handed saved the Works album for me. I will never forget his comments on the Dvd From the Beginning where he sl*g.ed off the Love Beach album with such sarcasm and wit. His on stage presence was mesmerising too. He was one of the originals. RIP to one of the greatest keyboardists.

I was just crushed to learn of Keith's passing last night.

One of my favorite reminiscences is to think of the duet with Oscar Peterson where they played Honky-Tonk Train Blues. That was a real eye opener for me, because I always considered Mr. Emerson a bull in a china shop who was an endless font of reckless fun. What comes through in that video is how much respect he had for Oscar and how he cast his bravado aside and tickle the ivories with another legendary musician. Keith was clearly on his best behavior that day!

I saw the Who in Louisville last night, and Pete Townsend mentioned Keith Emerson during the set. There were a lot of photos of Keith Moon and John Entwistle shown on screen before and during the concert. I guess all musicians of that age are feeling their own mortality very strongly now.

And how were they...really? I saw them in the mid 80's in Toronto, but it was a horrible outdoor event in mid October. Have you seen them before?

I went to see Umphrey's McGee last Friday night not having heard the news. They encored with From the Beginning. I thought how sweet to hear one of my favorite ELP songs. It was the first time they played that song at one of their shows and they did a good job. It was only when I got home from the show and learned the news, did I realize it was in tribute to Keith. The progessive Founding Fathers are one by one, existing the stage. What an amazing blueprint and legacy they have left behind to build upon for all time.

I saw them back in 2001, just before Entwistle died, and enjoyed that one a lot, and this too. However, it is worth noting that there were eight musicians on stage last night. Great musicians, one and all, and Zach Starkey is a much better drummer than his father ever was, and played phenomenally. I just couldn't help noticing that it took eight musicians to put on as good a show I saw 15 years ago with four.

Most of the songs were what you'd expect (Who Are You, I Can See for Miles, etc. - which is not a complaint because I love all those songs) but a few were surprises - Bargain from Who's Next, for example, which I never expected to see live. A really brilliant closing of Won't Get Fooled Again and a great, great Baba O'Riley. Also Pinball Wizard, which is my least favorite Who song ever, but I knew it was coming so just ignored it.

Great set and light show as well. Townsend was very chatty and funny. The main complaint is that Daltrey's and Townsend's voices are just not great these days, but it didn't really detract from the songs.

We really enjoyed it, but I am sure that will be it in terms of live shows for them. It felt very much like a farewell tour, but maybe that is just in light of recent news and my mood rather than theirs.

^Pino Palladino. I thought he did a fine job. My husband (who Knows About These Things) says he's an excellent bassist.

^ Oh yes, he played on Gilmour's About Face in the 80's, and also for Paul Young. Usually on a fretless.....can't see fretless bass working in The Who though.

Well that's the thing about grief, you need to move beyond it to resume any semblance of a normal life. I also have no doubt he'd be happier than a dog getting it's belly rubbed that there was a conversation about music taking place. Plus, he had a great sense of humour so I'm sure he'd have loved the pun. But by all means, please grieve in the fashion that you see fit.

Now, to combine both topics, on the drive to Louisville we listened to ELP and appreciated Keith Emerson thoroughly.

Listening to ELP LIVE IN SOUTH AMERICA. Fantastic performance. Emerson shines as usual. Brilliant band. RIP EMERSON.
