Not aware of his recent hand surgeries, but in the 90's Keith was diagnosed with ulnar neuropathy (I know it very well because I experienced the same injury at about he same time). Ulnar neuropathy causes tingling and numbness especially in the ring and little finger and if not corrected can lead to debilitating weakness and loss of motor control.

Rather than a conservative "cubital tunnel release" which attempts to take the pressure off the nerve by opening up the nerve channel and removing a small portion of the surrounding soft tissue, Keith underwent a very aggressive procedure called a nerve transposition. In that approach, the "funny bone" nerve is moved from the outside of the elbow around to the top of the arm. The thought is by relocating the nerve you completely remove it from the cubital tunnel to fix the problem...unfortunately, this in essence moves your "funny bone" from your elbow to the top of your forearm and has a very small percentage of success.

When my surgeon was recommending a cubital tunnel release, we discussed the nerve transposition option. I'll never forget his words, "I'm not a religious man, but I believe God put your ulnar nerve across your elbow for a good reason and I don't recommend moving it." My surgery was completely unsuccessful, but luckily a couple years later I found a DO (Osteopath) who was able to reduce the symptoms to a manageable level without surgery.

I've always wondered if Keith's nerve transposition surgery (or any other recent ones I'm not aware of) actually helped or just caused more problems? The thought of being able to play like Keith, but not physically able to do so would drive anyone to despair.

This news is like a punch to the gut. Really sad news.

Another great loss for rock music, and specifically for progressive music. One of the true heroes of the keyboards. May the Lord of all creation grant him peace.

He was the best prog musician Ive ever heard in my life , I don't think I`m alone feeling that way about him .. I`m devastated by this news .. may not eat today don't think I can. So soon after Chris Squire my favorite bass player ever. Still cant imagine Keith Emerson gone or a world without his playing ... through your music Keith I learned to love you, now your music is all that remains, I still feel I can visit you in a sense through your works, its moments like these we find out how deep music really is.

Luckly science is closer and closer to make people live longer and keep their youth, its working in mice already, the bad news is that it will not be available 'till a couple of decades in the future, so we gonna lose a few more legends for now Disapprove
