Yup.  If you've ever taken a peek at the original Popeye strip (back in the old days when it was called Thimble Theatre), Elzie Segar crammed a TON of dialogue into it, typically with a lot of snarky little asides and in-jokes.  I like how the original Popeye cartoons kept not only the look but the spirit of the original comics.


And for the record, the Popeye's fast-food eatery is majorly disappointing.

Beetle Bailey really is a product of its time.....pertinent humor for the active and discharged soldier after WWII, which meant a large portion of the men in the US (and beyond).  Some of the "humor" is for insiders only....how can a civilian who has never served truly see the humor in "fire guard" duty (I still don't know what that means)? 
 
Garfield never cracked me up......the bumbling Jon character may have made me smile, but it never was funny.
 
Popeye is another military-themed comic but the character is a schlub until he eats his spinach.....not really funny but, like other serial cartoons, there is a running story and themes are repeated....but they're not very funny.
 
Now, give me the Wizard of Id, Frank and Earnest, Andy Capp.....great stuff from a bygone era that remains pertinent today.  Even better, give me the Far Side, Calvin and Hobbes and (my personal favorite) Bloom County.....has Berke Breathed (sp?) really started the series again?
I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

Between these, probably Garfield. I grew up reading Garfield and Beetle Bailey in the papers, but never encountered Popeye. I agree with whoever said it earlier, I find it hard to identify with the boot camp setting, but I never realized it had been going strong for 65 years by the same author. That's pretty amazing.

But if we're talking old comics, Sazae-san is an excellent one from Japan in the post-WWII era. It was an original, amusing style, and had more impact on its time and people (and future generations) than any comic I know of.

As for more moderns ones, I grew up with Calvin & Hobbes. I have the full anthology from Watterson, and I've read through it at least half a dozen times over the years. Those are some quality funnies in my opinion, but certainly a different style than anything in the poll.

Frazz is one I look for in the papers nowadays. It's a novel idea, though not always executed greatly, but I'm always hoping for a good strip.



For those of you who do read the funnies in the paper, do you prefer seeing reruns of classics (like Peanuts), or seeing new cartoonists getting their chance? Peanuts is great, but I'd prefer giving someone newer a run instead.
