Well, I'm pretty happy with the choies, Gary, wouldn't be the worst ordeal revisiting them!

What's your thoughts on that new District 97 album? Like the new Karfagen album, that's another I had the CD of arrive a few days ago, just haven't listened to it yet.

Hmmm, I'm off for a bit of a drive tomorrow, maybe I'l listen to those two then?

I think I've heard it three times including the first time on YouTube.
I like it a lot but time will tell if it passes up Hybrid Child (but I think it might).
Trouble With Machines is one that I need to spend a little more time on.

^^ Yeah, repeating that list is not a difficult task :)

Tonight's choice:
Jean Michel Jarre - Les Chants Magnétiques (Certainly not a first listen)

I ripped two discs for the car, Sam. `Oxygene/Equinoxe' on one, `Les Chats/Rendez-vous' on another (sadly the original CD's look a little confused that `Zoolook' is missing, but they better get used to that!

`Equinoxe' is still decent, it's just not the most challenging follow-up to `Oxygene'. The more up-tempto synth/pop start to the second side gets a little grating, and I can't stomach the first half of the final track with that synth-polka, but it's not so bad really.

^ Perfectly understandable Tongue It's still better than his new album Sick

Yes, more Pop, but after the huge success of Oxygène, it's not really unexpected. It's longer than it should be but I think the reprise is more grating. By synth-polka, you mean the last track of Chants Magnétiques? My vinyl copy has written where that track is: it was probably from a cover band, since people used to dance to that back then LOL

I meant the `8th' part of `Equinoxe'.

Totally agree, of course it would have been more consciously `pop' and commercial. It's harmless and pleasant without being particularly challenging or even memorable, but it's alright for what it is.

I only got `Oxygene' (and heard it for the first time) about two years ago. I avoided it for so long, assuming it was going to be New Age-y, plastic, overly commercial fluff. Despite the fact there IS those elements to it, I was genuinely surprised that it had plenty of strong pieces on it.

But no, I haven't heard the new one, and to be honest I never even entertained the thought of getting it!

Right, the one with thunder and the music box, I don't find it bad.

Oxygène is a genuine classic album, he never released other albums as good as that one. I saw him play the full album at the 30th anniversary tour, with all the vintage synths. Thumbs Up

It's still the only electronic concert I ever saw, I miss that kind of experience Approve

Hmmm, I'll have to look into it, it sounds like we're talking about two completely different tracks! I remember the rain opening the second side (second half of the CD)?

That would have been great to see! Wish it had come to Australia...and kind of suprised that it didn't! If anything, I think he'd more more well known than Tangerine Dream.

I'm thinking of ordering a three CD set by Steve Roach (yes, I know, in addition to the multiple sets I need to catch up on AND that are due for release over the next couple of weeks! ) called `Quiet Music', a triple disc set that contains all the albums he did shortly after `Structures from Silence' in 1986. Have you heard any of the three volumes of it? I'd like something closer to his early style.

This one then? (I didn't know there was a music video, it's so 70's Tongue)

I don't think he did extensive tours like TD. I was already surprised he annouced a European tour, it was the only time he ever played here. I wish I had seen TD five years ago, or Kraftwerk this year (it was between the Arena concert and the Prog festival, I hate when all interesting concerts happen in the same month, and then there are months without a single good concert Confused)

Never heard any, but I'm busy with the 3 CD set of SFS Tongue

Where've you been my friend? I hope you and the family are doing goodSmile

Cool to see Dungen's new in there. What do you think about it? I'm listening to it right now and digging the hell out of it!

Just out of curiosity: which of those GG albums do you like the most? I've really been getting into Three Friends over the last couple of years, but ATT is still my alltime fave.

Oh and come by the 2015 Picks thread if you're looking for some AOTY contenders (most of which are to be found on PAs spotify list)Wink

Thanks budd!
Yes it has been a while actually, things have been really busy here, I honestly couldn't even find the time to fart Dead
Anyway it seems like it's cooling down now and I'm back on listening to music for a change.

I was really waiting for another Dungen album, I've only played it twice by now but my first impression is really really good! it definitely sound more interesting than Skit I Allt. First of all it's always enjoyable to listen to Dungen since their sound is just so amazing and beautiful. Again as opposed to Skit I Allt (sorry I know you love it) which I've only played maybe two or three times too, it seems like the melodies here are better and the music has a little more room to breath, I might call it more progy too.
And of course Reine Fiske is tha man!

Although GG were one of the first bands I got into when I was just starting the prog journey and since then I've listened to hundreds of hundreds of bands they still remain one of the best bands I ever knew.
why? well besides the outstanding level of songwriting and playing, they've released one great album after the other for so many years, they are one of those few bands that I can't choose an album that I think is better than the other, they are all so so good. But funny that you mentioned ATT I honestly always had an obscure attraction for that album, maybe it's that cool opening theme with the keys and that psychedelic flow it has.

It's good to hear from you my friend, and I'm really looking forward for recommendations, I'd love something new.

Ahh nutsOuch

I know what you speaketh of my good man....and I don't even have children like youLOL Oh boy I can just imagine...
I've been so busy with school and more recently my internship, yet I've still managed to pop by this placeEmbarrassed That is all I do though. No energy for cooking, cleaning, mating or shaving - which has resulted in a very lean, Santa Claus-like looking David roaming an apartment that looks like some large mammal unsuccessfully built a nest out of socks, LPs and what looks like a small Afghan wig.

I'm glad you liked Allas Sak. I think it's up there with their finest releases (4, Tio Bitar and Stadsvandringar) and just like you mentioned, I too am picking up on a positively more progressive shading to their music. They seem more playful, and that is always a good sign if you ask me.

Yep, that psychedelic almost symphonic quality to Three Friends is definitely also what lured me in. I think it's their most "together" album, sonic-wise. The songs feel connected to each other.
ATT holds my alltime fave GG tune though, the one and only The House, The Street, The RoomHeart

Oh and before I forget - now you asked for it - here's a tune off elephant9's newest Silver Mountain. May it kick your bee-hind in the most delightful manner:

“The Guide says there is an art to flying or rather a knack. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.”

When I discovered Fiske was playing with Elephant9 I immediately ckd Atlantis, but for some reason I found it to be a little heavy on the ears and not so memorable, but I didn't gave up on it yet Thumbs Up

Heh I just listened to Necromonkey. Awesome album - definitely ending up on my list!

I think you'll find a lot more to like on Silver Mountain if you feel that way about Atlantis. They have cooled down considerably although they still bring the rain...in buckets! I think of it as a fusion/krautrock album tbh.

Yesterday was great....well music-wise that is. I could have done without the 9 hour kindergarten break in between albumsDead

Clivage - Mixtus Orbis (One of the best albums on PA. Should be in every household)
Can - Tago Mago (Ditto)
Gérard Manset - La Mort d'Orion (Suave and experimental homage to the death of Orion)
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks (Best Dylan album. His voice, in particular, was never better)
Herbie Hancock - Sextant (Does what the cover art promises: takes you out among the pyramids and stars with Shaman-like dancers at your side)
Necromonkey - Show me where it Hertz (Full on ostrich)
Vangelis - The Dragon (Vangelis' Krautrock album)
Africa Express - Presents Terry Riley's In C (Fantastic rendition chuck full of African percussion)
