What albums did you listen to today?

Aussie-Byrd- Tangerine Dream – Hyperborea - Sam, I definitely think this is mostly superior to `White Eagle’, more detailed. The two longer pieces (second and forth tracks) are really impressive, and `Cinnamon Road’ is a cool but thankfully brief synth-pop piece. But for me the poorest track is the opener! It seems like a 4 minute idea stretched far too thin, very repetitive and quite tedious to my ears! Nick's a big fan of this one, he'll probably spring to it's defence! [/QUOTE wrote: Oh that I am. I just feel the whole album reality just works for me. It's really as good as tangram on many levels for me.

Well, Cinnamon Road is sort of related to Midnight In Tula (from White Eagle). Light, synth-pop sensibilities, not what you expect after so many lengthy epic pieces from TD. However, the more involved pieces more than make up for some 'light relief'. Love 80's TD no-end (at least up to Optical Race).
Meshuggah - so, I spotted the 'Special Edition' 'I' vinyl release whilst on holiday in the States, (The New Orleans stint of our itinerary in January this year) and all I knew was that they were on P.A. as a Tech Metal band. Never bothered to read a review, never knew they had a Growler vocalist. Just saw 'I' was a sidelong piece and I was sold.
When I got home, I spun it - DEATH GROWL WTF ?? I took it track by track, just shaking my head - love the music, love the complexity, LOVE the crunching bass. DEATH GROWL vocals...........I just wanted to die.........
So, I put up an attempt at a review, and the LP stayed in the crate until the last few weeks when I decided to just crank it up and just do it. Boy, it was tough, but I've come around, watched lots of footage, interviews and such - yep, WICKED band, can tolerate the 'growl', and I think Jens pulls it off very well. This stuff is a cut above your 'regular' Death Metal. These guys kick severe ass, and I did find a relation within their music to Magma (De Futura being the main composition which came to mind), so, now I am really digging these guys, and really lapping it up. I hope I can twist someone's arms here to get me the vinyl Koloss for Christmas. That would be INSANE !! I've looked into Gojira and Dillinger Escape Plan but they don't measure up to Meshuggah. And I still have plenty of Kajagoogoo to run back to if my head caves in . I would be the sort of guy to rock up at a Meshuggah gig wearing my 'Goo T-Shirt (probably asking to get my head kicked in but somehow I'd talk myself out of it.....)

   Meshuggha really do kind of invoke a certain kind of fan-base for sure. I think the only thing that would save me going to a Meshuggha concert is my beard.
Anyhow, the process or adaptability you've gone through to really appreciate an extreme taste or side of music is quite amazing. It's very open minded and you now have more sonic treats to enjoy. I underwent a similar experince with Agalloch. John hiam's death growls took some getting used to at first, but like you I realize that is totally necessary with the style of music at hand.
Given your tolerances to Meshuggha I think you would find AGALLOCH's Ashes against the grain a walk in the park, especially since there is the Opeth factor of a mix of clean and death growl vocals....or vockills I should say. :)
Anyhow, as a friend, I would really recommend that album to you. I really think you'll enjoy it.

Tangerine dream-- Logos (live) -- what a great album to wake up to. I just love the 17min mark of logos pt2. So beautiful.
Tangerine dream-- hyperborea ( title track still remains my favourite TD track of all time. This album still hasn't lost its effect on me. )
Anekdoten-- until the ghosts are gone. ( this album is really something. Lots of detail. Love the dual TRON sound. :)
Devin Townsend--- z2 ( dark matters)-- probably will buy the the live at the royal Albert hall set. How could I not? What a great artist. :)
Porcupine tree-- light bulb sun (24/48k LPCM)-- killer recording!!!
Chroma key-- you go now. ( mr. Moore is back at it!! Started a patreon campaign and has already reached his fund goals to record a new chroma key album. First in 10 yrs!
