Here is a documentary from 1979 on the origins of The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal by Danny Baker and featuring Iron Maiden. Since this program was made "at the time" and is not retrospective history it's probably as close to being a factual account as it is possible to get:

Anyone (in the UK) who caught the "It Was Alright in the 1960s" programme on Channel 4 last night will have seen the footage of the Shulman brothers being besieged by "permissive" young girls at a Simon Dupree and the Big Sound gig in the 1960s. Curious as to the context where the band allowed themselves to be filmed snogging, signing breasts, allowing some of these adolescent girls into their dressing room and "giving them a lift" in the group's transit van after the gig, I have tracked down the original BBC Man Alive report - a documentary called "Ravers" (read: "groupies", but in actuality just female fans) from 1967, which was a typically sensationalist (and condescending) piece that the BBC programme became infamous for. The Shulman brothers aren't as exploitive and immoral as the editing of the Channel 4 program suggests, or the Man Alive reporter tries to portray...

Lots of great docos seemed to be mentioned here. I really enjoyed the VH1 chapter of Kajagoogoo. Not the world's most beloved band, but this feature is spot-on, showing them off as passionate, ambitious musicians, going beyond the superficial 'bubblegum' pop image they were mostly known for. Maybe not 'the best' band the 80's had to offer, but certainly my favourite.

If you guys can understand portuguese, this is a good video on Brazilian Prog Rock. Sadly, there is no perspective on making a full lenght documentary or putting subtitles.
