Do you like them very much, David? I kind of figured they might be a little `clean' sounding RPI-wise for your taste? Not having a go at all, I just know you like a little toughness and dirt!
When I think of that album, I often think `synth-porn'?! Just over every inch of it! |
Synthporn is a very nice word for it, indeed!
I like it but I don't love it. I guess you know my tastes well by now as you actually used the same word for the album as I did: 'clean' -Perhaps a little too clean for my tastes....but I think that's down to the production side of things. It may grow on me though

I don't mean it in any mean way (I love the band!), but I just think Emmanuelle, the singer and main keyboard player sometimes seems like he `can't keep his hand off it', like a kid discovering masturbation for the first time! Urgh...sorry, folks, let's move on!

Then again there are times where I find the 'cleanliness' to suit the music. Marillion's Fugazi instantly springs to mind (as does most of Steven Wilson's output with PT and solo). So it's not like I don't appreciate a 'clean' production.....it's just not that often I think it benefits the album.

Best modern IQ album right there
Oh and nice to see Tim Blake mentioned too! Took me a little while to get my head around his solo output as I was expecting him to expand upon the sound he conjured up for Gong in a track such as 'A Sprinkling of Clouds'. I wasn't expecting him to go full-German

Naturally you mention the one cut that sounds like it could've been sneezed out of 'A Sprinkling of Clouds'

That's a pretty nice Renaissance set, eh, Sam? Heh, my Mobius physical CD arrived literally as I was leaving for work this morning! Is the second Flying Colours album any good? I heard parts of the first and thought it was OK for what it is, but I wasn't so impressed enough to buy it. Is the second one more interesting? The Gilmour album is superb! Not prog by any means, but a good, varied and intelligent rock album. I only bought the standard CD version, as the bluray set, despite havng lots of attractive bonus goodies, was pretty much triple the price! I wasn't willing to take that much of a chance on it. I'm annoyed, I launched into writing a review of `Rattle', got the introduction and conclusion written then thought `Great, now I'll spin the album and comment on the tracks', only to find I forgot to transfer it onto my Ipod before leaving for work!

Yes it is and it was good to hear some tracks that weren't on "Carnegie Hall". Too bad the quality isn't as good, that constant buzzing on the right channel was annoying The interaction with the audience was quite fun... and I love Annie's laugh
I only noticed it's so short when I listened to it the other day, although I wouldn't mind if the third track wasn't there.
I don't know the first one, I found a CD copy at the local store and bought it. It's a nice album, some kind of progressive AOR, with two mini epics to remind you it's Prog It's not on the same level as most Spock's Beard albums, but I don't regret buying it
I really liked it too, it was better than I expected. I bought it on vinyl, it was only a few euros more expensive than the CD, and half the price of The Endless River. I'll be sure to read your review

I think those two recent Renaissance sets are essentially `official bootlegs'....hmm, what a minute, was this the one with the `yellow' cover or the `red cover' (I never remember which is which off the top of my head! . I'm a little more easy-going on that third track too (remember my initial rant?! ), but only because I can see how good the vocal arrangement is. Still the weakest part of the album for me. Progressive AOR, exactly what I thought the second `Flying Colours' might be. Think I might hold off and see if I can came across it second-hand eventually myself. I feel that the new Gilmour might be better than the previous `On An Island' one as well (even though that was always a deecnt album). There's some suprisingly up-tempo and upbeat stuff on it too! That second last track almost sounds like it's from a different album altogether!

It's the red one.
I hope it will get better with more spins.
The instrumental is great, there are some interesting guitar solos and the usual drums proficiency of Portnoy but it's a song-based album, so expect a lot of vocals.
I love "On An Island", it's too early to know if the new one is better. Do you mean that poppish track with some cool bass lines? The vocal jazz track was a nice surprise too.
