I tried watching The Big Lebowski for the first time last night.  I am generally a fan of Coen Brothers movies, but this one I could not abide.  I turned it off just over half way through.  It seemed to have no point, was not very funny, and I simply did not enjoy it.  Am I wrong?

(yes, there are some quotable lines  LOL.)

This movie about a old rock star is hilarious at times mainly because of the Sean Penn character...
Music is the refuge of souls ulcerated by happiness.

In the weekend, I watched this:

Swedish comedy about a young man who has becomes hopelessly square and upright as a reaction against his dysfunctional bohemian parents, then has to be shocked into thinking for himself by several friends who want to enlist him in getting their new business started. Along the road, he gets tangled up in a bunch of con artists trying to scam each other out of their money.

It's not bad at all and quite witty, just somewhat darker and nowhere as goofy as the advertising promises often touching on some rather serious subject matter in some of the later plot twists.

Haven't seen any of Fulci's movies as a matter of fact, but a friend of mine from college who's something of an expert on horror films as she's studied it academically (having majored in film/media studies) happens to be an admirer of his.

^ I bet you are also into Lucio Fulci stuff.

Honestly, I didn't even find Demons innovative (aside from make-up, ... I think).

Italian 1980s horror movie about a mysterious cinema that while showing a strange horror film cause the audience to become possessed by demons and start attacking each other. It's not very long, but almost every scene is bursting with inventiveness in almost every aspect, and quite a bit of very morbid humour. Helps that like most Italian horror films it's very surrealistic in its entire sensibility and runs more on "dream logic" than traditional narratology.

Also, I love how damn 1980s it is right down to that soundtrack.

The Cabin In The Woods

Joss Whedon co-directed and written film about a group of college students unknowingly used in an ancient ritual to appease the Old Gods. Interesting twist on the demonic horror film with pretty  good special effects...but ultimately turns into  your basic slasher film even with the different ideas involved.
For fans of Whedon.

Trainspotting.

I liked the movie, ... but ... there's something missing.

"Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a starter home. Choose dental insurance, leisure wear and matching luggage. Choose your future. But why would anyone want to do a thing like that?"

You can choose a decent life or you can choose to become trash. But when everything in life has lost its meaning and you don't want to become trash, what do you become? Or what can you choose to become?

I think I know what the movie is missing. (Hint: a shrink's phone number.)

Choose a direction. Choose a place. See if imagination, talent, and tolerance of unsatisfying jobs choose you ... or not. Wink

Fantastic Four(Reboot)
Complete and utter trash. Don't waste a dime watching or time discussing this failed attempt to bolster the weakest Marvel entry ever. Don't expect a sequel unless they need a tax write-off.

British comedy about a dysfunctional lower-class family trying to make it in the restauration business, without really getting anywhere. It's not quite as bleak I had thought, but still quite realistic. I loved how well it captures the entire "the 1980s are over and we don't know what to do" vibe the beginning of the 1990s had. Also, their sarcastic introverted moody teenage daughter reminds me a lot of one of my exes in both appearance and personality (who however didn't have her rather peculiar sexual preferences and thankfully was not a bulimic), which is rather uncanny. Probably exactly what she was like back in high school.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation.

Eh, ... so stale. Action, humor success rate ~= 50%, and a dull plot. Give it up, Tom.

Muppets Most Wanted - I still love the muppets cause Im a manchild 7/10

Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead - supposed to be like Mad Max meets the Zombie Apocalypse, sounds better than it was, I wish the Max elements were more prominent, but a few things were cool, others were typical 5.5/10

Solomon Kane - I actually liked this, despite being slim on the source material, it was a pretty straight forward Swords & Sorcery action romp, 7/10

Coincidence - saw this one a couple of days ago & I agree - way better than Raid 1. Better storylines, character development (not just the good guys either) cinematography stunning in places (the fishing scene was beautifully shot), choreography of the fight scenes was jaw dropping - yes, I am using a lot of superlatives, but I think The Raid 2 is a martial arts film for people who don't think they like martial arts films. Loved it.

A solid 9/10 from me.

The Raid 2 - I actually liked this one way better than the first, much better story, with more ups and downs tempering the nonstop action allowing you can actually get to know the characters a little better, of course the fight scenes were still abundant and OTT, but they at least seemed to have more impact 8.5/10

The man behind Pusher, Bronson and Drive turns his attention to the viking age resulting in one of the most unique sword-and-sandal epics I've ever seen. Imagine the barbaric existential mysticism aspect of the first Conan movie from 1982 turned up to 11, with very little dialogue or narrative structure, and you have a good idea of what you're in store for.

Instead of a typical historical action movie, it's more of a bloody metaphorical journey operating on dream logic into the spiritual struggle between Germanic Paganism and Christianity. There's also quite a few direct references to Werner Herzog's conquistador biopic Aguirre the Wrath of God, and for that matter the fighting choreography is more similar to old samurai movies than to anything to come out of the Occidental film industry in a long while.

It's a quite divisive movie, but I really liked it. Also, is it just me or is the main character meant to be interpreted by the audience as secretly being the one-eyed war-god Odin in the guise of a mortal? You need to know your Norse mythology in order to pick up on all the allusions, so maybe that was lost on audiences outside of Scandinavia...

Honestly, one of the best films I've seen for a long time - one of those films so good, the Oscar nominations completely bypass it. An innocent priest told he is to be killed in 7 days in revenge for a parishoner's abuse as a child. The premise being nobody would raise an eyebrow at the killing of an abusing priest, but an innocent one...

Watch it.

Lenny

Luminous and soulful doc-style recreation of Lenny Bruce's life as a comic bustling in NYC jazz and strip clubs as he rises to cult status and eventually destruction, Dustin Hoffman providing the agony of one of the great figures of the 1960s who, along with Jimi Hendrix and Bruce Lee, defined those mercurial and breakout times.  Lenny Bruce's story is sad to be sure.   Worse, it is tragic.   Recommended.

Most recently, I saw...Rifftrax Live: Sharknado 2. It was a lot of fun, as expected, though comparing it to former Rifftrax Live events I've been to, it wasn't QUITE as funny as the showing of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians or Night of the Living Dead. Lots of laughs, though, and the short at the beginning was great.
