Reallly  the top half is sort of wide open.. a LOT of great albums... no real shoe'ins.  Then again.. the bottom half is pretty wide open as well. The favorite is in tough fight.. likely the next best album IMO on that side of the bracket is losing..

perhaps that Hatchet album is the dark horse.  LOL what it is doing to a superior Squire album is not only criminal.. and indictment of the forums.. but a clue, no a reminder that the power of Ivan's army of gen-bobbleheads should never be underestimated.

I honestly think Hackett has benefited so much from the fact that he's just kept making decent interesting music forever. He's a better guitarist than he's ever been and his tastes and ideas have been expanding constantly up until his most recent album, which isn't something you can say for any of the other classic prog musicians. Also a *beautiful* classical guitarist and great arranger.

I think Voyage is an OK instrumental prog rock album and Spectral Mornings is a little better but I think part of the reason they're so well liked is that Hackett's more or less just got better since that lull in the 80s.

you ain't kidding about that..  Raff and I saw him at Nearfest several years back and that was a fanfrickintastic show.  He is a helluva player and has definitely had some years to work on his songwriting.

heavy action in the polls today...

shoujld be a great week and weekend as most polls average around 60 votes.. a bit more for the most popular acts.. less for the foreign ones LOL

most polls are already in the 40 to 50 vote range and Progspin is only able to call 3 of the polls. Hachett, Oldfield, Amon Duul II,  and is almost ready to call only a 4th... Hatfield and the North.

a lot of close ones.. and a couple still too close to project this early.

I still need to vote on

You vs. Octopus (this will be hard)
Low Spark vs. Yeti (don't know Low Spark)
Storia vs. Days (don't know Storia)

Other items of interest:

I'm glad Oldfield is putting the boot into Kansas.
I feel like *that* Squire album should beat *that* Hackett album but it won't.
Pawn Hearts has recovered manfully and should grind Mirage into dust.
Si On Avait Besoin D'Une Cinquieme Saison is ten times the album that Aja is (especially as all the people who think MO is pointless technique vote seem to like Aja, which is smooth and hairless as a statue, and as bloodless too).

My four top albums are currently winning their polls.

Thats funny, I'd describe Si on Avait... the same way. Haven't heard Aja so I'm not going to be voting on that one.

and many WAY WAY too close to call..

look at that bottom of the bracket... 6 of 8 polls with margins 3 or less.

even more fun... look at the bottom 4... TOTAL vote margin...

2 votes.

wide frickin open...Clap

yeah...  I have 3 album in my top 20 still left... all 3 appear to be on to the 4th round baring major major movement.  My 4th favorite ... in a complete dogfight with another classic and fellow member of my top 100 list.

We knew as the tournament went on.. the choices would get harder.. nice to see the polls reflect it.  Makes me think we did a damn good job selecting these things.. as much of who we included.. in who we did NOT include.

Right, my faves will defend themselves with vehemence, I'm sure LOL
Yes, it's nice to see duels where only in the last minute one can see who is the clear winner.
The fun of the early stages in the polls is the amount of albums.
The fun in the later stages of the polls is seeing all the photo finish duels between the best of the best.

Of my four top 10 albums still in the competition

Ommadawn looks ok to advance & if it makes it to the quarters will probably fall to VDGG or Camel
If Rotters Club gets past Rush (I still expect legions of Rush-head to appear this week) it will probably make the Quarters then it's a crapshoot with YS, Hot Rats, PG3.

My other two, Cuex Du Dehors & Western Culture are currently pounding on each other and will probably get trampled by Hackett in the next round.

On the Moderns side I have bands I like in pretty much every match up except Gazpacho - Beardfish (dear god), and IQ - Talk Talk (where I'll go TT)

I'm dreading Pendragon going deep as they keep matching up against 'difficult' albums that probably switch a lot of middle ground people off. (UneXpect, U Totem and possibly Guapo)

my favorite modern albums took it in the ass from the forumites here  only one of my top 4 escaped the first round LOL

however that one is one of the few SWilson/PT albums capable of wining the whole thing.. ie beating one or both.

Talk talk baby...

yeah...  the tweak we did.. leaving out the populars by the big heavies is really paying off now.

Much like the battle of the bands.. the early rounds herewere great.. but due to enivitablity of the last ones standing..  it lost a bit LOT of steam.

here.. sh*t man... there are at least 12 albums there IMO. A third.. that have (had prior to 3rd round winnowing)  realistic chances to win the tournament.  A lot of quality.. and less of the fanboy idol worhips attached to some bands and albums.  We will have to suffer Hachett in lieu of Genesis.. but like any forum.. every contest needs the character that wears the black hat.  Gives you something to root against LOL

A few tight battles still going on but it looks like YS, Renaissance, Oldfield, Steely Dan, AD2, Hatfield & Osanna are moving on. Is VDGG far enough ahead of Camel?

Just a reminder that my vote for You (v. Octopus) wasn't accepted. My vote might make all the difference.

Progspin - Prog News without taste, flavor, access, knowledge or any semblance of discretion.

BREAKING NEWS!! -  We got word this morning that PA's Tournament Chairman Mad Mick wanted to make an announcement to the forum. We just got word he has left his office and is now holding court in the bar and with a microphone. Let's break our regularly scheduled programming and listen to his address.  We'll return to 'How to make a profit running a Prog website' hosted by M@X after this special annoucemnt

'Hello ladies and gentlemen. First off I want to thank everyone for their participation in the contest polls and also thank everyone for their patience as we have severely disrupted the poll section with our flood of polls.  I'll make this short and sweet then answer any questions.

We are changing the schedule of the next stage of the tournament. We were originally going to run the 8 polls of the 4th round of the classics next week, followed the next week by the 8 polls of the modern polls then take a one week break for the Labor Day weekend. Instead of doing that we are taking a break next week and then on Saturday the 29th we will run both the classics and modern 4th round polls (16 in total).  Those polls will run for 2 weeks over the Labor Day weekend since many proggers, including myself with be getting drunk and enjoying Ut Gret and the rest of the bands at Progday.  I felt this was a good move as it relaxes the stranglehold we have had on the polls section for a week plus reflects the notion that with the 4th round we have hit the real decision point for these polls and any winners from these.. could be and should be seen as potential tournament winners. The merely good or simply great have been eliminated. Those albums still standing should be considered the cream of the crop.

after a commerical break I would like to get into another change we are implementing starting with the 4th round...

Now the 2nd thing we are implementing is a long rumored .. long threatened change to way votes are tabulated.  So starting with the 4 the round we are going with a new way to calculate votes.

collab/PR votes count for 2 votes
posted votes for members count for 1 vote
unposted votes count for 1/2 vote

nothing changes in the actual polls themselves. I will update the actual totals a daily until a winner is evident.

the reasoning..   someone noted in the aja-alphabet thread we do have a lack of discussion in these polls. They are and can be so much better with it so I want to encourage that. So I am going to penalize votes that just click and forget. Easy solution if you want your vote to fully count.. put a name and an opinion behind it

now the difference between collab and non collab stated votes.  It not as much to set collabs above as much as to encourage those who are not to step up.  Thoughtful posts and interesting discussion points will get the voter a 2nd point as it were.

any questions ask away. I'll do the calculations.. and would take nominations for suggestions on awarding bonus discussion points.  It is your contest..for your enjoyment... make it of it what you will.
