First of all, no Avant or Zeuhl or Kraut. Looking at the "other bands" I find hilarious the recommendation for Breathless. Should I suggest a Camel album, that's one that I would never think of. But I agree with "Close your eyes and try to imagine the scenarios that the songs are crafting" It's a good suggestion, IMO

Sorry, I am NOT going to listen to Invisible Touch or We Can't Dance ever again. Heard enough of that from the radio and didn't like it then!
|
More heavy prog, please!

Generally I agree with those here who have said (in essence) people don't get into music quite this way. You like what ya like!
But that's MOST people, not all people. And if this article prompts even a small number of people to explore and get to like prog rock (who would not have done so otherwise) I think its a good thing!

And how do you get 15 year olds to forget about Miley Cyrus above and embrace Peter Gabriel below?

Why shouldn't 13 year olds listen to Miley?

Well it is possible that some teens actually get some of the same out of her music as we do with say Tull or Floyd. I saw this interview with a 15 year old girl who'd completely changed her life (for the better), because of Miley's music. She said she got goosebumps from certain numbers and that the lyrics made her question her own life. Reminds me of something Me? I neither hear or see it (mjeeaaah maybe I see it a little bit - rrrrauw), but let's leave it up to people to find their own taste in music.

^Strangely, there's always a thread that runs through music and disparate artists. Miley was featured on the last Flaming Lips record. The Flaming lips are Floyd fanatics and did a not so hot cover of DSotM a few years before. If a Miley fan gets into some later psych pop Flaming Lips like Yoshimi, then he or she may go into a prog direction. This is the only business or marketing way I know of to bridge this kind of gap, but it is possible.

^Hey, when I think of Peter Gabriel, that's the image that comes to mind. And Peter is responsible for that!

That's like saying you won't watch ST:TOS because you saw "Spock's Brain" and decided the whole series was crap. It's not representative.

How to enjoy prog?
I'm not entirely sure, but I bet this man has the answer:

Funny article and funny thread! I especially laughed at: "Don't force yourself to listen to more progressive rock then you can take in."But seriously, I discovered prog with Three Sides Live and Abacab in the 80's, and worked my way backwards... .
